CHAPTER 1: THE MARK THAT WAS BURIED

CHAPTER 1: THE MARK THAT WAS BURIED

Lady Celeste knew.

That was the difference between her fear and everyone else’s shock.

While the nobles whispered and the king trembled before a miracle reborn—

Celeste remembered the night of fire.

She remembered the screams.

She remembered the command.

“Find the child.”

Not to save her.

To make sure she never returned.

Celeste’s breathing grew uneven as she stumbled backward, her mind spiraling.

It wasn’t supposed to happen.

The mark was sealed.

Hidden.

Erased.

Seventeen years ago, a royal sorcerer had sworn it would never surface again.

Unless—

Unless the bloodline awakened it.

Or something… broke the seal.

Her eyes snapped toward the shattered crystal pitcher on the floor.

Ice.

Water.

Impact.

A violent shock to the body.

Her stomach dropped.

“No…” she whispered again, barely audible.

Meanwhile, the king’s trembling fingers hovered over Mara’s skin, just inches away from the glowing phoenix.

“Your name…” he asked, voice fragile. “Tell me your name, child.”

“M-Mara…” she stammered.

The king closed his eyes as if struck.

“Mara…” he repeated, like a prayer he had forgotten how to say.

But then his expression changed.

Pain.

Confusion.

Fear.

Because something didn’t add up.

“My daughter…” he whispered, “was named Elara.”

The room stirred again.

Doubt crept into the miracle.

Mara shook her head quickly, panic rising.

“I don’t know anything! I—I was left at the orphan house when I was a baby! I don’t—”

“Enough.”

The voice came sharp.

Cold.

Commanding.

Lady Celeste stepped forward.

And for the first time since the mark appeared—

She smiled again.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

But dangerously calm.

“A glowing mark proves nothing,” she said smoothly, her voice cutting through the tension. “Magic tricks are not uncommon among street performers.”

Gasps followed.

The accusation hung in the air like poison.

Celeste turned to the king, her expression softening into practiced concern.

“Your Majesty… you have suffered enough. Please don’t let desperate illusions reopen old wounds.”

The king didn’t respond.

His eyes remained fixed on Mara.

But hesitation had begun.

And Celeste saw it.

That was all she needed.

CHAPTER 2: THE TEST OF BLOOD

“Bring the relic.”

The king’s voice, though shaken, carried authority that silenced the room instantly.

Servants rushed.

Within minutes, a velvet cushion was carried into the center of the ballroom.

Upon it rested a small dagger.

Ancient.

Intricately carved.

The Blade of Lineage.

A sacred relic passed down for generations.

It could not lie.

It would only react to true royal blood.

Celeste’s heart pounded—but her face remained serene.

“Of course,” she said gently. “A test will put all doubts to rest.”

Mara stepped back instinctively.

“I don’t want this…” she whispered. “I’m not—”

The king’s voice softened.

“Child… if there is even the smallest chance…”

His voice broke.

“…I must know.”

Mara hesitated.

Then slowly…

She nodded.

A servant took her trembling hand.

The dagger’s edge barely touched her palm.

A single drop of blood fell—

Landing on the blade.

For one long second—

Nothing happened.

Celeste exhaled quietly.

But then—

The dagger ignited.

Not with fire.

But with the same golden light as the phoenix.

Brighter.

Stronger.

Unmistakable.

The entire blade glowed as if it had awakened from centuries of sleep.

Gasps erupted.

Several nobles fell to their knees instantly.

The king collapsed forward, unable to stand.

“It’s her…” he choked. “It’s really her…”

Mara stared at her own hand in horror.

“I don’t understand…” she whispered.

But Celeste…

Celeste didn’t move.

Didn’t speak.

Didn’t react.

Because her mind had already jumped ahead.

If the mark returned—

If the blood awakened—

Then the seal had broken completely.

Which meant—

The truth could surface.

And if the truth surfaced…

Everything she had would burn.

CHAPTER 3: THE SECRET THAT SHOULD HAVE DIED

“Seize her.”

The command came suddenly.

Sharply.

From Celeste.

The entire room froze.

Even the guards hesitated.

“Lady Celeste…” one of them said uncertainly.

“She is an unidentified magical entity inside the royal court,” Celeste snapped, her voice rising just enough to sound righteous instead of desperate. “Until her identity is verified beyond manipulation, she is a threat to the crown.”

The nobles murmured.

Fear was easy to spread.

Especially when magic was involved.

The king struggled to his feet.

“No one touches her—”

But his voice faltered.

Age.

Shock.

Years of grief.

It had weakened him more than anyone dared admit.

Celeste stepped closer, lowering her voice just enough for only him to hear.

“What if this is a trap?” she whispered. “What if someone created her to claim the throne?”

The king’s hands trembled.

And for a single, dangerous moment—

He hesitated.

That was all it took.

The guards moved.

Two stepped toward Mara.

She backed away, panic flooding her chest.

“I didn’t do anything!” she cried. “Please—!”

And then—

The phoenix flared.

Brighter than before.

The air shifted.

A wave of heat burst outward, forcing the guards to stop.

The chandeliers trembled.

Windows rattled.

And from somewhere deep within the palace—

A voice echoed.

Ancient.

Powerful.

Unmistakable.

“The heir has returned.”

The entire ballroom fell to its knees.

All except one.

Celeste.

Her face had gone completely pale.

Because she recognized that voice.

She had heard it once before.

Seventeen years ago.

The night everything burned.

CHAPTER 4: THE NIGHT OF FIRE RETURNS

“Impossible…” Celeste whispered.

But it wasn’t.

Because the past had never truly died.

It had only been buried.

And now—

It was clawing its way back to the surface.

The great doors of the ballroom opened slowly.

Without being touched.

A figure stepped inside.

Robed in dark crimson.

Eyes glowing faintly with golden light.

The Royal Sorcerer.

Or rather—

The man everyone believed had perished in the fire.

Gasps rippled across the room.

“You…” Celeste staggered backward. “You died—”

“I was meant to,” he replied calmly.

His gaze shifted to Mara.

Softening.

Relieved.

“But fate is stubborn.”

The king stared at him, shaken.

“You were the one who sealed her mark…”

The sorcerer nodded.

“To protect her.”

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Celeste’s breathing became uneven.

“No…” she whispered. “That’s not—”

“You ordered it,” the sorcerer interrupted quietly.

The words hit like thunder.

The entire room turned.

Celeste froze.

“You ordered the soldiers to find the child,” he continued. “Not to save her.”

The king’s world shattered all over again.

“…No…” he said, voice hollow.

Celeste shook her head violently.

“He’s lying! He’s trying to—”

“You feared her,” the sorcerer said. “Because the prophecy was never about you.”

The room seemed to shrink.

Every eye locked onto Celeste.

“You were never meant to be queen,” he finished.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Then—

Mara spoke.

Her voice small.

Shaking.

“…Why?”

Celeste looked at her.

And something finally broke.

Not fear.

Not panic.

But truth.

“Because everything was supposed to be mine!” she screamed.

The illusion shattered completely.

Gasps. Whispers. Horror.

“I waited seventeen years!” Celeste continued, her voice cracking into something wild. “Seventeen years to become what I was promised!”

“You were promised nothing,” the sorcerer said coldly.

Mara stood frozen.

Her entire life rewritten in seconds.

The king slowly turned toward Celeste.

The grief in his eyes had changed.

Hardened.

“You… took her from me.”

Celeste didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Because everyone already knew.

And in that moment—

The balance of the kingdom shifted.

Not with war.

Not with blood.

But with truth.

The lost princess had returned.

May you like

And the one who stole her life…

Had nowhere left to hide.
