Rep. Maxine Waters’ Campaign Hit With Heavy FEC Fine Over Finance Violations

The campaign committee for veteran California Representative Maxine Waters has reached a settlement to pay a $68,000 civil penalty following a federal investigation into various election law infractions.

FEC Findings and Regulatory Breaches

According to a series of documents released by the Federal Election Commission (FEC), the 2020 campaign organization, Citizens for Waters, was found to have breached several campaign finance statutes.

Under a legally binding conciliation agreement intended to resolve the matter without litigation, the FEC cited the committee for:

  • Failing to provide accurate reports of receipts and disbursements during the 2020 calendar year.

  • Knowingly accepting campaign contributions that exceeded legal limits.

  • Making prohibited cash payments.
