Chapter 3 - THE SON HE CHOSEArthur’s terror did not look like panic.

It looked like absolute stillness.

He stood in Julian’s empty bedroom, staring at the photograph left on the pillow.

The open window allowed cold air to move through the curtains.

Below it, a narrow maintenance ladder extended from the second floor to the garden.

Someone had planned the abduction carefully.

Someone knew the security cameras had been redirected toward the vault.

Someone knew the nursery doctor would be alone.

Someone knew Julian’s bedroom better than an outsider should have.

Arthur picked up the photograph.

BRING THE DRIVE.

Detective Reed entered behind him.

“Do not touch anything else.”

Arthur turned.

“My son is gone.”

“We will find him.”

“That is not enough.”

“It must be enough until we know where he was taken.”

Elias Grant arrived carrying a tablet displaying the estate’s security system.

“Sir, the cameras surrounding the north garden were disabled for seven minutes.”

“Who had access?”

“Myself, the control-room officers, and senior family accounts.”

“Sebastian?”

Elias hesitated.

“Mr. Sebastian’s credentials were never removed.”

Arthur’s eyes hardened.

“Track every vehicle that left the estate.”

“A delivery van exited through the maintenance gate six minutes after the cameras failed.”

“Who authorized it?”

“The system shows Clara’s code.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Clara’s face went pale.

“No.”

Detective Reed approached.

“Where were you when Julian disappeared?”

“In the east nursery preparing his tea.”

“Was anyone with you?”

“No.”

“Who knows your security code?”

“No one.”

Arthur studied Clara.

She had cared for Julian since infancy.

She had held him while he cried for Evelyn.

She had risked Victoria’s anger to save him from the study.

But Victoria’s warning returned to him.

Look more closely at the people you call family.

“Clara,” Arthur said quietly, “tell me the truth.”

“I am.”

“Did Evelyn give you access to the vault?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell Sebastian?”

“No.”

“Did you help anyone enter the estate tonight?”

Clara shook her head violently.

“I would die before allowing anyone to hurt that boy.”

Detective Reed looked at Elias.

“Codes can be copied.”

“Yes,” Elias said. “But the system records the device used.”

He examined the screen.

“The code was entered from Clara’s staff phone.”

Clara reached into her apron.

The pocket was empty.

“My phone is gone.”

“When did you last have it?”

“When I put Master Julian to bed.”

Arthur’s jaw tightened.

“Who was in the room?”

“The doctor. Julian. Me.”

“Anyone else?”

Clara closed her eyes, searching her memory.

Then she opened them.

“Victoria’s assistant.”

Arthur stared at her.

“Melissa Crane?”

“She came to collect Victoria’s jewelry case. She said the police had approved it.”

Detective Reed immediately contacted the officers guarding Victoria.

Melissa Crane had never requested permission to enter the nursery.

She was also no longer at the estate.

Elias tracked the delivery van through traffic cameras.

It traveled south toward the city, then disappeared inside an industrial district owned by one of Sebastian’s companies.

Arthur demanded to accompany the police.

Detective Reed refused.

“You are emotionally involved and may endanger the hostage.”

“He is my son.”

“That is exactly why you cannot make tactical decisions.”

Arthur placed the black drive on the table.

“They want this.”

“We do not know whether the drive is their real objective.”

“They took a child and left a direct demand.”

“They may also want you.”

Arthur understood.

Sebastian had spent his life resenting him.

Their father had given Arthur control of Vance Holdings despite Sebastian being older.

At the time, Richard claimed Sebastian lacked discipline.

Arthur now wondered whether his father had known the real reason.

Sebastian had inherited the family’s appetite for secrets.

Arthur had inherited only the company built from them.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Detective Reed activated a recording system before allowing him to answer.

“Arthur speaking.”

A child’s breathing came through the line.

Then Julian whispered, “Daddy?”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“I’m here.”

“I’m scared.”

“I know. Listen to me. You are going to be all right.”

A man’s voice interrupted.

“Touching.”

Sebastian.

Arthur’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Let him go.”

“Bring the drive.”

“Where?”

“Old Vance Terminal. Warehouse Six.”

“I need proof he is not injured.”

There was movement.

Julian cried out.

Arthur nearly lost control.

Sebastian returned to the phone.

“He is alive. Whether he remains comfortable depends on you.”

“You do not need him.”

“I need you to understand what powerlessness feels like.”

Arthur’s voice lowered.

“If you hurt him, there is nowhere on earth you will be safe.”

Sebastian laughed.

“You still sound like Father.”

“I am nothing like him.”

“You run his company. You live in his house. You spend money built from his crimes.”

“I did not know.”

“That is your favorite defense.”

The words struck.

Sebastian continued.

“You were always allowed to be innocent because everyone else handled the dirt.”

“What do you want besides the drive?”

A pause.

Then Sebastian said, “The company.”

Arthur looked at Detective Reed.

She signaled for him to keep talking.

“You want me to transfer Vance Holdings?”

“I want controlling authority, access to the trust, and a public statement withdrawing every accusation against Victoria.”

“You are protecting her?”

“I am protecting myself.”

“Victoria will betray you.”

“She already did.”

Arthur frowned.

Sebastian continued.

“She married you because I told her to.”

The room became silent.

Arthur felt no heartbreak.

Whatever illusion had remained about Victoria was already dead.

But the scale of the deception stunned him.

“Why?”

“You were becoming suspicious about the missing development money. Victoria needed access to your home, your accounts, and Evelyn’s remaining files.”

“So the marriage was part of the fraud.”

“It was part of many things.”

“Did you kill Evelyn?”

The silence lasted too long.

Then Sebastian answered.

“Bring the drive.”

The call ended.

The police traced it to the industrial district.

Warehouse Six stood beside an abandoned freight terminal.

Detective Reed organized a tactical team.

Arthur was instructed to remain in the command vehicle.

He agreed.

Then, while officers prepared, he quietly replaced the black drive with an identical empty device.

He placed the real one inside the lining of his coat.

Detective Reed noticed.

“What are you doing?”

“They will search me.”

“You are not entering that warehouse.”

“He asked for me.”

“We can send an officer wearing a wire.”

“Sebastian knows how I move, how I speak, and how I look under pressure.”

“Your presence may make him more dangerous.”

“My absence may make him hurt Julian.”

Detective Reed stared at him.

“You follow every instruction I give.”

Arthur nodded.

“I will.”

“You do not attempt to be a hero.”

“I am not interested in being a hero.”

“What are you interested in?”

“Bringing my son home.”

Arthur approached Warehouse Six alone.

A listening device was hidden beneath his shirt.

Officers surrounded the area.

Rain had begun falling, tapping against the rusted metal roof.

The warehouse doors opened.

Melissa Crane stood inside holding a gun.

Victoria’s elegant assistant now wore black trousers and a raincoat.

Her face was expressionless.

“Hands where I can see them.”

Arthur raised his hands.

“Where is Julian?”

“Walk.”

She searched him and found the false drive.

Arthur was taken deeper into the warehouse.

Julian sat tied to a chair beneath a hanging lamp.

His mouth was uncovered.

When he saw Arthur, he began to cry.

“Daddy!”

Arthur stopped himself from running.

“I’m here, Julian.”

Sebastian stepped from the shadows.

He wore Arthur’s missing wedding jacket.

The white flower remained pinned to the lapel.

He smiled.

“A family reunion.”

“Release him.”

“When the transfer is complete.”

A laptop rested on a metal table.

Documents had been prepared electronically.

Arthur examined them.

They would transfer his voting shares, property authority, and temporary guardianship of Julian to Sebastian.

Arthur looked up.

“Guardianship?”

Sebastian poured himself a drink.

“In case you become unavailable.”

“You think I will sign away my son?”

Sebastian glanced toward Julian.

Daniel’s words returned.

The boy isn’t yours.

Arthur looked at his brother.

“You arranged the false paternity story.”

Sebastian smiled.

“It may not be false.”

Julian watched Arthur with terrified eyes.

Sebastian opened a folder and removed a DNA report.

It claimed Sebastian was Julian’s biological father.

Arthur read it without changing expression.

“Another forged test.”

“Evelyn and I were close.”

“You are lying.”

“Ask Clara.”

Arthur looked up sharply.

Sebastian’s smile widened.

“She knew.”

Julian began shaking.

Arthur put down the report.

“Julian, look at me.”

The boy raised his eyes.

“Nothing written on that paper changes who I am.”

Sebastian laughed.

“You don’t even want to know?”

Arthur ignored him.

“Julian, who came when you had nightmares?”

“You.”

“Who taught you to ride your bicycle?”

“You.”

“Who sat beside you in the hospital when you broke your arm?”

“You did.”

Arthur’s voice softened.

“Then I am your father.”

Julian cried.

Sebastian’s smile faded.

Arthur turned toward him.

“Blood does not make a man a father. Choosing a child does.”

For the first time, Sebastian looked genuinely angry.

“Sign the documents.”

Arthur moved to the laptop.

He entered his security credentials.

The police listened through the wire.

Detective Reed waited for the tactical signal.

Arthur saw Melissa glance toward the eastern wall.

A small red light blinked near a stack of fuel barrels.

Explosives.

Sebastian never intended to release them.

He intended to destroy the warehouse after receiving the transfer.

Arthur continued typing.

Then he entered a special emergency code.

The laptop screen froze.

Across every Vance Holdings account, an automatic security lockdown began.

Sebastian’s face changed.

“What did you do?”

“I protected the company.”

“You locked everything.”

“Only until the police take you into custody.”

Sebastian grabbed Julian and pressed a gun against the boy’s head.

“Undo it!”

Arthur’s heart stopped, but his voice remained steady.

“You need me alive to unlock it.”

Melissa looked toward Sebastian.

“You said no one would be hurt.”

“Be quiet.”

“You said we would take the money and leave.”

Sebastian pointed the weapon at her.

“I said be quiet.”

Melissa fired first.

The bullet struck Sebastian’s shoulder.

The tactical team entered.

Gunfire exploded.

Arthur threw himself toward Julian.

He knocked the chair to the floor and covered the boy with his body.

Officers seized Melissa.

Sebastian ran toward the fuel barrels holding a detonator.

Detective Reed shot him in the leg.

He fell.

The detonator slid across the floor.

Arthur reached it first.

He grabbed it before Sebastian could press the button.

Sebastian looked up at him, bleeding and furious.

“You always take everything.”

Arthur stood over him.

“No.”

He held Julian against his chest.

“I only took responsibility for what you were too selfish to love.”

Sebastian was arrested.

The explosives were disarmed.

Melissa agreed to cooperate in exchange for protection.

Outside the warehouse, paramedics examined Julian.

Arthur knelt beside him.

The child touched the cut on Arthur’s face.

“Does it hurt?”

“Not very much.”

Julian looked down.

“Is Uncle Sebastian my real dad?”

Arthur did not lie.

“I don’t know.”

Julian’s eyes filled.

Arthur took both of his hands.

“But I know I am your father.”

“What if the test says he is?”

“Then the test tells us where part of your body came from.”

Arthur placed a hand over Julian’s heart.

“It does not tell us where your home is.”

Julian threw his arms around him.

Arthur held him as rain fell across the abandoned terminal.

In the distance, police lights flashed against the dark buildings.

The truth about Julian’s birth remained unanswered.

But one thing had become certain.

Arthur would choose him again.

May you like

And again.

And again.
