Chapter 12 - Brooke Tells the TruthBrooke did not cry until she saw Lily.

The meeting happened in a secure family room at the hospital, with Marcus, Dr. Archer, a child advocate, and two state investigators present.
Lily sat in a wheelchair, wrapped in a soft yellow blanket. Her left leg was elevated. Her right hand rested carefully on a pillow.
Brooke stood by the door, unable to move.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
Lily looked smaller than Brooke remembered.
Or maybe Brooke had spent too long pretending not to see how small she had always been.
Lily’s voice was quiet. “You sent the video?”
Brooke nodded.
“Why?”
Brooke wiped her face with her sleeve. “Because they lied. Because everyone always lies for them. Because I should have screamed.”
Lily looked down.
Marcus watched his daughter decide what to do with someone else’s guilt.
Finally, Lily said, “I was glad somebody saw.”
Brooke covered her mouth.
The child advocate gently guided the conversation away from the worst parts. Brooke explained what she had recorded, where older videos were stored, which staff members had witnessed violence, and where Charles kept private ledgers.
Then she said the name no one expected.
“Miranda has copies too.”
Marcus went still.
Brooke looked at him. “She started making copies after the divorce. I saw her once. She had a folder labeled LV custody. I think she was scared they’d use Lily against her someday.”
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“They did.”
Brooke nodded.
“She didn’t stop them,” Marcus said.
“No.”
The truth sat there, ugly and complete.
Miranda had feared the monster.
She had fed the monster.
She had documented the monster.
And when the monster turned on her child, she closed the curtain.
By afternoon, investigators obtained a warrant for Miranda’s private office at Blackridge.
They found the folder exactly where Brooke said it would be.
Inside were custody threats, financial records, photographs of bruises from earlier incidents Marcus had never known about, and emails from Evelyn coaching Miranda on how to “discipline Lily’s loyalty to her father.”
At the bottom was a sealed envelope addressed to Marcus.
It had never been mailed.
When he opened it, there was only one sentence inside.
If anything happens to Lily, it was never an accident.
Marcus read it three times.
Then he folded it carefully and handed it to the investigator.

Whatever Miranda had been, she had known.
And knowing had not been enough.
