Chapter 2: The Shadow of the Estate

The sprawling Brooks family estate was intimidating. Wrought-iron gates stood like sentinels guarding a mansion that seemed too large, too cold, and far too silent. For Claire, stepping through those grand double doors with baby Leo in her arms felt less like a homecoming and more like walking into a trap. Margaret Brooks, Daniel’s mother, had insisted they move in. "You are family now," Margaret had said, her eyes tracing the familiar contours of her grandson’s face. But not everyone shared her sentiment.

The tension in the grand foyer was palpable the moment they arrived. Waiting by the marble staircase was Arthur, Daniel’s older brother, a man whose sharp jawline and icy blue eyes mirrored the chilling atmosphere of the house. Beside him stood Victoria, Daniel’s former fiancée. Victoria was striking, dressed in immaculate designer clothes, her lips painted a severe shade of crimson. She had lingered in the Brooks' lives long after Daniel’s passing, clinging to the status the family name provided.

"So, this is the... miracle child," Victoria drawled, her gaze sweeping over Claire’s modest clothing with thinly veiled disgust. "Margaret, surely you aren't naive enough to believe this sudden appearance is a coincidence? A DNA test from a clinic she probably chose?"

"Victoria, that is enough," Margaret snapped, though her voice wavered with the exhaustion of grief. "The test was conclusive. Leo is Daniel’s son."

Arthur stepped forward, his posture rigid. "Mother, you are vulnerable right now. We all miss Daniel, but welcoming a stranger into our home based on a piece of paper? It’s reckless. You know what Daniel’s trust fund entails."

Claire pulled Leo closer to her chest, her heart pounding against her ribs. "I didn’t come here for a trust fund," she said, her voice shaking but resolute. "I didn't even know Daniel came from all this. He lived in a small apartment in Ohio. He drove a ten-year-old car. I just wanted my son to know his grandmother."

Victoria let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Oh, the classic 'I didn't know he was rich' defense. How terribly convenient." She leaned in, her perfume thick and suffocating. "Listen to me, little girl. I know exactly what you are. And I will expose you."

That night, alone in a lavish guest suite that felt more like a gilded cage, Claire couldn't sleep. The walls seemed to close in on her. She walked over to the crib Margaret had hastily arranged, watching Leo’s chest rise and fall. He was her anchor. But as she looked out the window at the sprawling, dark grounds, a creeping sense of dread settled over her. Victoria was not going to let this go. The battle for her son's rightful place in his father's family had only just begun.
