Chapter 5 - The Wealth of the Inherited Lie
When I pulled back into the driveway of the family estate at 3:15 AM, the main gates were locked, a private security vehicle parked near the entrance. My mother’s corporate attorney, Harrison Vance, stood near the front door, a leather briefcase resting across his knees.
"Ethan," Vance said, standing up as I stepped out of the vehicle alongside two police cruisers. "Your mother is inside, highly distraught. She is willing to overlook your erratic behavior tonight under certain conditions. We have drafted a temporary asset management agreement. If you sign over your voting shares of Miller Industries to her trust, she will agree not to pursue legal action regarding the breach of contract."
I walked right past him, my boots heavy on the wooden porch steps. "Get out of my way, Harrison."
"Ethan, think logically!" Vance hissed, following me into the grand foyer. "She controls sixty percent of the primary real estate holdings! She can evict you from the corporate headquarters by Friday afternoon! You'll be bankrupt before your wife is even discharged from the hospital!"
I pushed open the door to the master suite. My mother was sitting in her velvet armchair, her fingers tracing the edge of a crystal decanter.
"You came back," she said, her voice dropping into that smooth, maternal purr. "I knew you would, Ethan. A man of your intelligence doesn't just throw away an empire for a broken woman. Let the lawyers handle Ava's medical placement. We can manage the estate together, just as your father intended."

I didn't look at her. I walked directly to the painting behind her desk, swung it open to reveal the wall safe, and stood back as Detective Reynolds stepped forward with a federal search warrant.
"The business is yours, Mother," I said, my voice dead and level. "The shares, the land, the houses—take them all. But you are going to spend the rest of your life realizing that all that money couldn't buy you a single second of my silence."
