Chapter 9 - The Lawyer in the Walls

Leonard Drake should have been seventy-two.
The man on the screen looked older than that, but not weak.
He moved through the tunnel with disturbing familiarity, one gloved hand brushing the stone wall as if he had walked that hidden passage many times.
Alessandro leaned toward the monitor.
“Where does that tunnel lead?”
Matteo’s voice shook.
“Old chapel entrance. North garden. Wine vault. And…”
He stopped.
“And what?”
“The family archive.”
Alessandro turned sharply.
The family archive contained original deeds, trust documents, sealed correspondence, and records dating back three generations. It had survived lawsuits, financial crashes, and two world wars.
If Drake reached it, he could destroy whatever Lorenzo had hidden.
“Security team to archive,” Alessandro ordered.
“No,” Sophia said.
Everyone looked at her.
She stood in the doorway, Emma still asleep in her arms.
“Don’t send loud men through the main corridor.”
Alessandro frowned. “Why?”
Sophia nodded toward Emma.
“She hears things. Smells things. Notices things. She said earlier the bad smell came from the kitchen, but also from the hallway near the pantry.”
Matteo understood first.
“The pantry connects to the old dumbwaiter shaft.”
Sophia nodded. “And the laundry chute connects to the archive level.”
Alessandro stared at her.
“You know the house better than my security team.”
“I clean what they guard.”
The words landed quietly but powerfully.
Alessandro turned to Matteo.
“She leads.”
Matteo nodded.
Sophia shifted Emma in her arms.
“I’m not leaving my daughter.”
Dr. Royce stepped forward. “She can stay with me.”
Sophia’s eyes flashed.
“No.”
Alessandro did not argue.
“Then we all move together.”
They took the service route.
No grand staircase.
No polished hallway.
Sophia led them through the narrow back corridors that the Duca family rarely saw: laundry rooms, supply closets, staff passages with old stone floors and low ceilings.
“This house has two faces,” she whispered. “The one your guests see. And the one people like me use to make that face shine.”
Alessandro said nothing.
He had lived in the mansion most of his life and never felt more like a stranger inside it.
They reached the lower archive corridor.
A faint smell lingered in the air.
Emma stirred against Sophia.
Her eyes opened.
“Mommy.”
“I’m here.”
Emma wrinkled her nose.
“Bad medicine.”
Alessandro stopped.
Sophia’s face tightened. “Where, baby?”
Emma pointed toward a narrow door marked LINEN STORAGE.
Matteo frowned. “That room should be empty.”
Alessandro drew closer.
From behind the door came the smallest sound.
Paper sliding.
He pushed it open.
Leonard Drake stood inside with a metal case open at his feet.
He did not look surprised.
“Alessandro,” he said calmly. “You look more like your father every year.”
Alessandro stepped into the room.
“Drake.”
Sophia held Emma behind him.
The old lawyer smiled faintly.
“And this must be the child.”
Sophia’s grip tightened.
“Don’t speak to her.”
Drake ignored her.
“Remarkable little nose. Her father underestimated her.”
Alessandro moved fast.
He grabbed Drake and shoved him against the shelves.
“What did you do to Marco Alvarez?”
Drake coughed, but smiled.
“I did what was necessary.”
Alessandro’s fist tightened.
Sophia whispered, “Don’t.”
He stopped.
Not because Drake deserved mercy.
Because Sophia deserved justice.
Drake looked amused.
“You still believe courts solve things?”
“They solve enough.”
“For poor people, perhaps. Rich men buy time. Old families buy silence.”
Alessandro leaned closer.
“Then why are you hiding in a linen room?”
For the first time, Drake’s smile flickered.
Matteo picked up the metal case.
Inside were documents, old passports, cash, and a sealed envelope addressed to Alessandro.
Matteo handed it to him.
Alessandro recognized his father’s handwriting immediately.
His heart slammed once against his ribs.
He opened it.
My son,
If you are reading this, I failed to survive what I uncovered.
Alessandro stopped breathing.
Sophia watched his face change.
Lorenzo’s letter was short.
Brutal.
He had discovered Beatrice, Raffaele, and Leonard Drake using Duca Logistics to move illegal medical supplies, launder money through shell charities, and forge trust amendments. He planned to report them after securing evidence.
He never got the chance.
At the bottom, one line had been underlined twice.
Trust Matteo. Protect the innocent. And never drink coffee served by blood.
Alessandro closed his eyes.
All these years, his father had not died without warning.
He had left a map.
And Alessandro had been too surrounded by liars to find it.
Drake sighed.
“Touching, isn’t it?”
Then his hand slipped toward his coat.
Sophia saw it first.
“Alessandro!”
A small black device hit the floor.
Not a weapon.
A remote.
Drake pressed it with his shoe.
Somewhere inside the archive walls, something clicked.
Then smoke began curling from under the shelves.
May you like
Drake smiled.
“Evidence burns faster than justice.”
