Chapter 2 — Cracks in Marble

The house felt different that night.

Not louder.

Just… exposed.

Adrian sat in the dim light of his study, sleeves rolled, tie discarded, staring at nothing in particular. The events in the kitchen replayed in fragments—Harper’s trembling voice, Miles’ desperate grip, Lillian’s perfectly timed explanations.

Too perfect.

He had missed it.

Not once. Not twice.

For months.

Maybe longer.

A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.

“Daddy?”

Harper stood in the doorway, barefoot, her nightgown brushing the floor.

Adrian’s chest tightened. “Hey,” he said gently. “You should be asleep.”

She stepped inside anyway.

“I don’t like when you’re gone,” she said simply.

There was no accusation in her voice.

That made it worse.

Adrian opened his arms without thinking, and she climbed into his lap like she used to when she was smaller, before things had changed in ways he hadn’t noticed.

“I thought…” he began, then stopped.

Thought what?

That providing was enough?

That silence meant peace?

That absence had no cost?

“I’m here now,” he said instead.

Harper leaned against him, her breathing slow and steady.

“Will you stay?” she asked.

Adrian closed his eyes for a moment.

Then nodded.

“Yes,” he said. “I will.”

Across the hall, Lillian stood unseen in the shadows.

Watching.

Her reflection in the glass of a framed painting looked unfamiliar even to herself—sharp, distant, unraveling at the edges.

For the first time, she wasn’t in control of the narrative.

And she knew it.

The next morning came too quickly.

Adrian canceled meetings.

Calls went unanswered.

Instead, he sat at the breakfast table with Harper and Miles, awkward at first, then slowly more certain—pouring juice, cutting toast, learning the small rhythms he had missed.

Lillian entered late, composed as always.

But no one spoke right away.

Because now—

May you like

Everyone was aware.

And awareness changes everything.
