CHAPTER 2 — "THE MANSION THAT NEVER BELONGED TO THEM"

Nobody moved.
Even the security guards remained perfectly still.
Grandfather handed one folder to his lead attorney.
"Read it."
The attorney opened the documents calmly.
"Effective immediately..."
"...Victor Harlan Construction has defaulted on thirty-seven secured loans."
Victor laughed.
"This is ridiculous."
"We own this property."
The lawyer looked up.
"No."
"You stopped owning it eleven months ago."
Silence.
Marissa frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
The lawyer continued.
"The mansion was secretly used as collateral."
"The debt was quietly purchased..."
"...by Vale Capital Holdings."
Adrian staggered backward.
"No..."
Grandfather finally spoke.
"I bought every one of your loans."
"I've simply been waiting."
Victor's confidence began collapsing.
"You can't prove fraud."
Grandfather smiled.
"No."
"My granddaughter can."
Every eye turned toward me.
With shaking fingers...
I reached beneath my hospital blanket.
Hidden inside the fabric...
was a tiny encrypted flash drive.
"I copied everything before you locked me upstairs."
Victor's face lost all color.
The attorneys connected the drive to a laptop.
Invoices.
Secret wire transfers.
Bribery payments.
Fake medical bills.
Forged signatures.
Insurance fraud.
Tax evasion.
Everything appeared on the enormous television screen.
Marissa screamed.
"Turn it off!"
Nobody listened.
Then another video appeared.
Security footage.
Victor looked confused.
"Where did that come from?"
I smiled for the first time in weeks.
"The chandelier."
His eyes shot upward.
The hidden camera had recorded everything.
The beatings.
The starvation.
The conversations about poisoning me.
The forged documents.
Even Adrian saying...
"If she dies before Friday..."
"...the inheritance transfers automatically."
The room exploded into chaos.
Police officers entered.
Victor tried to run.
The front door slammed shut.
Handcuffs clicked around Marissa's wrists.
Adrian collapsed onto his knees.
He crawled toward me.
"Elena..."
"I'm sorry."
"I loved you."
I stared into his eyes.
"No."
"You loved my money."
He burst into tears.
"I'll testify."
"I'll tell them everything."
Grandfather quietly nodded.
"I believe him."
Everyone looked shocked.
Why would Grandfather spare the man who destroyed his granddaughter?
Then Grandfather revealed one final truth.
"There is one person..."
"...who planned all of this before Victor ever did."
Every face turned toward him.
"The mastermind..."
May you like
"...was already sitting inside this room."
