CHAPTER 3: The Doors Open

The sound cut through the lobby like a line drawn across polished glass.

Everyone turned.

The frosted VIP double doors, which had remained closed all evening, swung open from the inside. A silver-haired man in a tailored gray three-piece suit stepped out first. He moved faster than a man of his age should have needed to. Behind him came two dark-suited executives and a blonde woman in a cream suit, all of them wearing the same urgent expression.

The security guard straightened immediately.

So did the receptionist.

The guests who had been watching with mild amusement suddenly stopped smiling.

The silver-haired man scanned the lobby once, saw the young woman, and his entire face changed.

Not recognition alone.

Relief.

He walked directly toward her, the others hurrying behind him. The guard instinctively stepped back, but not quickly enough.

“Move away from her,” the man said sharply.

The guard obeyed at once.

The young woman lowered her phone, her expression unchanged, though a faint sadness touched her eyes—as if she was less surprised by the humiliation than by how predictable it had been.

The man in the gray suit stopped in front of her and bowed his head with unmistakable respect.

“Ma’am,” he said quietly, “the board has been waiting for you.”

The silence in the lobby turned absolute.

The woman in pearls went pale. The man by the desk looked down at his shoes. The guard’s face drained of color as he realized, one second too late, that he had publicly blocked the most important person in the building.

Elena Vale gave a small nod.

“I can see that,” she said.

And somehow, because her voice remained so calm, the shame in the room deepened.
