CHAPTER 4: THE FRACTURED SANCTUARY

The ballroom did not just feel cold. It felt empty. Even with hundreds of people staring. Even with the flashbulbs blinding her eyes. Clara stood frozen. The yellowed papers felt like lead in her hands. "Say something," Clara whispered. Her voice was small. A child’s voice again. Eleanor Sterling did not look up. Tears tracked through her immaculate makeup. The iron woman of the financial world was gone.

Only a hollow shell remained. Julian stepped between them. His hand brushed Clara’s shoulder.

"Clara, we need to leave,"

he muttered.

"Now."

But Clara didn't move. She kept her eyes locked on Eleanor.

"Was it you?" No answer.

"Did you kill them?" Eleanor finally raised her head. Her lips trembled.

"I tried to save you, Clara."

That wasn't a denial. It was an admission.

Richard Harrington watched from the stage.

He did not smile. There was no triumph in his eyes.

Only the grim satisfaction of a man who had finally shared his curse.

"The press is crossing the barricades," Julian warned. The shouting grew louder. Reporters bypassed security.

Microphones shoved forward. Clara turned.

She didn't look at Julian.

May you like

She didn't look at Eleanor. She gripped the file against her chest.

And she ran. Into the pouring rain.

The neon sign of the motel blinked outside the window. Vacancy. A cheap room. Far from the penthouses.

Far from the lies. Clara sat on the edge of the mattress. The classified documents were spread out on the stained bedspread. Rain water dripped from her hair onto the paper. She didn't care.

A knock sounded at the door. Three quick beats. A pause. Then two more. Julian. Clara didn't get up.

"It’s unlocked."

Julian pushed the door open.

He looked soaked. Exhausted. He closed the door behind him and locked it.

"My father didn't follow you," Julian said quietly.

"Neither did Eleanor."

"Why are you here, Julian?"

He walked over and looked down at the documents.

"Because my family started this fire. I’m helping you put it out."

Clara wiped a tear before it could hit a page.

"Look at this,"

she said, pointing to a transcript from twenty-five years ago.

Julian leaned in.

The signatures belonged to Eleanor Sterling.

But the letterhead didn't belong to the consortium.

It belonged to an unlisted department.

Project Horizon.

"It wasn't just corporate greed,"

Julian murmured.

"Look at the dates."

Clara looked.

The order to intercept her father’s car was authorized three days before the explosion.

But there was a secondary code attached to the bottom.

Directive 9.

"What is Directive 9?"

Clara asked. Julian’s face tightened

"My father’s private security firm handles government logistics.

" He looked at her.

"Directive 9 means terminal asset elimination.

" Clara’s breath hitched. "

Eleanor authorized Project Horizon,

" Clara whispered. "But who authorized Directive 9?"
