Chapter 16 - Shadows on the Horizon

By the winter of their third year on the island, the rhythm of life on Sanctuary had become seamless and serene. Yet, true peace is rarely tested in the absence of conflict; it is tested when the specters of the past attempt to claw their way back into the light.

It began with an unexpected radio transmission on a Tuesday afternoon.

Dante was in the communications shack behind the main hacienda when the high-frequency radio unit—kept strictly for emergency maritime broadcasts—began to chatter with static. Through the white noise, a familiar voice called out a coded call-sign that hadn't been used in four years.

Dante immediately called Luca to the shack.

Luca put the headset to his ear. "This is Costello. Speak."

"Luca... it’s Vance," the voice came through, distorted by atmospheric interference but unmistakably that of the senior federal agent. "We have a situation. You need to listen to me carefully."

Luca’s expression hardened, his body instinctively settling into a defensive posture. "Marcus?"

"No. Marcus is in his cell in Florence. He’s not going anywhere," Vance replied. "It’s about Aegis Strategic Solutions. The federal bankruptcy court dissolved the firm six months ago, but three of their former senior partners fled jurisdiction before the indictments were unsealed. They were operating out of a private compound in Panama."

"And?"

"Panamanian federal police raided the compound forty-eight hours ago," Vance explained. "They recovered encrypted hard drives. On one of those drives was an active contingency contract—a 'dead man’s switch' authorized by Marcus three weeks before his arrest. It was a five-million-dollar bounty placed on your head, open to any independent contractor who could produce proof of your location."

Elena, who had walked into the doorway of the radio shack carrying a pitcher of lemonade, froze. Her face drained of color as she looked at Luca’s back.

Luca remained silent for a long moment, his dark eyes staring out at the green palm fronds blowing in the wind outside.

"Has the contract been claimed?" Luca asked quietly.

"That’s why I’m calling," Vance said grimly. "A rogue charter boat left Freeport twelve hours ago. It’s an eighty-foot sport-fisher called the 'Black Jack'. Satellite tracking lost them forty miles north of the Exuma chain. They’re running dark, Luca. You have mercenaries heading your way."

Luca didn't panic. He didn't swear. He simply took off the headset, set it carefully on the desk, and turned to Dante.

"How many men do we have on the island?" Luca asked.

"Including Joseph’s sons and the harbor crew? Eight men," Dante replied, his hand already moving to unholster his sidearm to check the chamber. "All of them former Bahamian defense force or local fishermen who know every inch of these waters."

"No civilian crossfire," Luca commanded sternly. "Joseph’s family stays in the main village on the south cove. Dante, take two men and secure the airstrip. Cut the landing lights and park the tractor across the runway. If they try to land a helicopter or a light aircraft, make it impossible."

"What about the boat?"

"They won't come through the main harbor," Luca analyzed smoothly, his mind reverting instantly to the tactical brilliance that had made him the most dangerous strategist in Chicago. "The harbor has a narrow channel and shallow reefs. If they’re coming by night, they will attempt a quiet insertion on the north beach—the rocky cove beneath the cliffs where the water is deep right up to the shoreline."

Elena stepped forward, her voice trembling. "Luca... please. We can call the Bahamian Coast Guard. We can take the sea plane and fly to Nassau right now!"

Luca walked over to her, taking her by the shoulders. His eyes were completely calm, filled with an absolute, terrifying certainty.

"If we run, Elena, we will be running for the rest of our lives," Luca said softly. "This contract was written by Marcus’s dead hand. Tonight, I am going to erase the last line of his handwriting. Go to the main house. Take Maya into the stone root cellar beneath the kitchen. Lock the iron door, and do not come out until I come get you."

Elena looked into his eyes, seeing no fear, only the unbreakable wall of a man protecting his home. She nodded, swallowed her tears, and ran toward the house to get their daughter.

Luca turned to Dante. "Fetch the wooden crate from beneath my study floorboards."

Dante’s eyes widened slightly. "The Chicago crate?"

"The Chicago crate," Luca confirmed. "It’s time to show these mercenaries why Marcus had to keep me in a basement for twelve years just to feel safe."
