Chapter 6: A New Family

One year later...

Sophie stood on another elegant ballroom floor.

This time, she wasn't afraid.

She wore a pale blue dress and smiled as she carefully scattered flower petals down the aisle.

When the ceremony ended, everyone applauded.

One elderly guest knelt beside her.

"You make a beautiful flower girl."

Sophie grinned.

"My mommy says brave people get second chances."

I smiled from across the room.

The scar near her hairline was barely visible now.

The fear in her eyes had disappeared completely.

As we walked toward the exit together, my phone buzzed.

A news notification appeared.

Preston's final appeal had been denied.

His conviction would stand.

I looked down at Sophie.

She slipped her small hand into mine.

"Mommy?"

"Yeah, sweetheart?"

"Are the bad days over?"

I squeezed her hand.

"They don't get to decide our future anymore."

She smiled.

"So now we can make happy memories?"

I smiled back.

"Exactly."

We stepped outside into the warm Chicago sunshine.

Leaving behind the family that had betrayed us...

And walking toward the one we chose to build ourselves.

Because in the end, it wasn't the wedding that defined our lives.

It was the moment the truth came to light.
