Chapter 2 - The Envelope Held Secrets That Could Bring Them All Down**

I sank onto a low stone wall at the end of the alley, my legs too weak to hold me up.

The envelope was full of papers.

Neatly stacked.

Carefully organized.

At the top was a handwritten letter.

Walter’s handwriting—small, precise, neat.

*Olivia,*

*I know you have no reason to trust me. For five years I stood by and said nothing while my wife, my daughter, and my son treated you with cruelty. I told myself it was not my place to interfere. I told myself family loyalty came first. But I was wrong. You did not deserve any of this.*

*What you hold in your hands is proof of what they did. Bank records showing Jason hid more than four hundred thousand dollars in offshore accounts during your marriage. Documents proving Sharon forged your signature to transfer the cottage on the coast—bought with your inheritance from your grandmother—into her own name. Evidence that Brittany stole almost eighty thousand dollars from the family hardware business over three years and let everyone believe you were the one taking it.*

*I have kept these papers for two years, waiting for the courage to do something. I did not have it until today, when I watched them throw you out like garbage. I am sorry it took me so long.*

*At the bottom of the envelope is a key to safe deposit box 417 at the downtown bank. My name and yours are on it. Inside you will find more evidence, plus fifty thousand dollars I have saved over the years. It is yours. Use it to hire a lawyer. Use it to take back what is yours. Use it to start over.*

*You were always the best thing that ever happened to this family. And we threw you away. I hope one day you can forgive me for being too cowardly to stand up sooner.*

*Walter*

My hands shook so hard I could barely hold the letter.

Tears I had refused to shed in front of them finally spilled down my cheeks.

Not sad tears.

Angry tears.

Relieved tears.

Tears of something I hadn’t felt in years: hope.

I looked through the rest of the papers.

Bank statements.

Transfer records.

Forged signatures that looked almost exactly like mine.

Receipts.

Emails printed out.

Everything.

Everything I would need to prove what they had done.

I stood up, my legs steady now.

I tucked the envelope safely inside my jacket.

The black bag I tossed into the nearest dumpster, just like Walter had asked.

I walked straight to the downtown bank.

The safe deposit box was exactly where he said it would be.

Inside, more documents.

And stacks of cash.

Fifty thousand dollars, just like he’d written.

Enough to hire the best lawyer in the city.

Enough to fight back.

I left the bank with my head held high.

For the first time in five years, I didn’t feel small.

I didn’t feel invisible.

I felt powerful.

Sharon, Brittany, and Jason thought they had won.

They thought I was gone, broken, with nothing.

They had no idea the storm that was coming.

And it was all thanks to the quiet man who had spent five years tending his cacti… and collecting proof.
