My 8-year-old daughter shut my hospital curtains after I gave birth.
Then she whispered, "Get under the bed. Now."
I was two hours postpartum in Room 614, still shaking, still bleeding, my son Ethan asleep in the bassinet beside me.
Rebecca didn't even look at him.
She ran straight to the window and yanked the curtains closed so hard the rings clicked on the rod.
The room dropped into shadow.
Her pink sneakers stopped beside my bed.

"Mom," she whispered, voice breaking, "not the bathroom. Under the bed."
No child says that unless she's seen something first.
I slid down anyway.
The metal frame scraped my shoulder.
Dust hit my throat.
Rebecca crawled in after me and grabbed my hand with both of hers.
Then I saw what she'd shoved under the blanket with us.
My cracked iPhone.
The camera app was already open.
A video was still recording.
The floor outside started to shake with slow, heavy steps.
Not rushed. Not confused.
Confident.
Rebecca pressed her hand over my mouth before I could call for help.
Her eyes locked on mine.
Then the door opened.
A man walked in like he had every right to be there.
I couldn't see his face from under the bed.
But Rebecca could.
Her whole body went rigid.
"It's him," she mouthed.
He stopped beside Ethan's bassinet.
Then his voice cut through the room, cold and certain.
"Take the baby," he said.
A second pair of shoes stepped in behind him.
White nurse clogs.

My blood went ice-cold.
The phone screen under my hand lit up with the visitor log Rebecca had pulled up before hiding me.
One name was highlighted.
And just as the nurse reached for my son, the video started playing with the sound on.
