CHAPTER 1 (Continued)

Julian's fingers tightened around the edge of the conference table until his knuckles turned white.

"A DNA appointment?" he said, forcing out a laugh that sounded far less confident than he intended. "Mother had no authority to demand something like that."

Attorney Charles Whitmore met his gaze without flinching.

"She did, as sole owner of the Vance Family Trust."

The room fell silent again.

"The trust's terms were revised eighteen months ago," Whitmore continued. "Every beneficiary was notified that amendments had been filed. Whether those amendments were read is another matter."

Julian's jaw clenched.

"I never received anything."

"You received them," Whitmore replied evenly. "You chose not to open the certified mail."

A faint murmur spread among the board members.

One director quietly whispered to another, "She always anticipated every move."

Harper sat motionless, absorbing each revelation. She had known Evelyn was meticulous, but she hadn't imagined the General had prepared for a betrayal of this scale.

Whitmore opened another page.

"The General further directed that, should evidence arise of conduct unbecoming a future chairman, voting rights attached to the family trust would be suspended pending an independent review."

Julian's eyes widened.

"You can't suspend my control."

"I cannot," Whitmore said.

"The trust already has."

Across the table, the company's chief financial officer slowly closed the folder in front of him.

"If that's accurate," he said carefully, "then today's emergency board meeting will have to proceed under the trust's contingency rules."

Julian turned sharply.

"You're siding against me?"

"I'm siding with the bylaws."

Sienna shifted uneasily in her chair.

Only an hour earlier she had imagined walking into this building as the future Mrs. Vance. Now she could feel the confidence draining from everyone around Julian.

Whitmore reached for another sealed envelope.

"There is one final instruction concerning Mrs. Harper Vance."

Every head turned.

Harper herself looked genuinely surprised.

Whitmore unfolded the letter.

"'To my daughter-in-law, Harper.'"

His tone softened slightly as he read.

"'You entered this family with grace, endured disappointment without complaint, and carried burdens that were never yours to bear. If these words are being read, then my greatest fear has come true: my son has mistaken power for character.'"

Harper lowered her eyes.

For the first time since Evelyn's death, emotion tightened her throat.

"'You owe no loyalty to anyone who has abandoned honor. Stand tall. Tell the truth. The truth will protect you better than any fortune I could leave behind.'"

A long silence followed.

Julian scoffed, though the sound lacked conviction.

"This changes nothing."

Whitmore looked directly at him.

"It changes quite a lot."

He placed a final document on the table.

"The General nominated an interim trustee to oversee the family trust until the investigation concludes."

Julian reached for the document before anyone else could.

His expression froze.

"No..."

The single word barely escaped his lips.

Harper frowned.

"What is it?"

Whitmore answered for him.

"The interim trustee appointed by General Evelyn Vance..."

He paused just long enough for the suspense to settle over the room.

"...is Harper Vance."

For several heartbeats, no one moved.

Then chairs scraped across the polished floor as multiple board members stood at once, stunned by the announcement.

Julian stared at Harper as though seeing her for the first time—not as the wife he believed he had discarded, but as the woman who now held the authority to determine the future of everything he had expected to inherit.

Outside, rain lashed against the glass walls of the boardroom.

Inside, the balance of power had shifted.

And Julian knew, with growing certainty, that his mother's final campaign had only just begun.
