PART 4: The Son He Wanted Never Existed

PART 4

The Son He Wanted Never Existed

Three days after the wedding collapsed...

Grant Lawson sat alone inside an interview room at the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

The expensive watches were gone.

The tailored suits were gone.

Even the confidence that had carried him through boardrooms had disappeared.

Across the metal table sat two investigators.

One pushed a folder toward him.

"Mr. Lawson."

"We've finished reviewing the financial evidence."

Grant swallowed.

"There has to be some mistake."

The investigator calmly opened the file.

"There isn't."

Inside were dozens of invoices.

Luxury vacations.

Jewelry purchases.

Wedding deposits.

Designer handbags.

Every expense had been charged to Vale Medical Systems.

Each approval carried Eleanor's forged electronic signature.

Grant closed his eyes.

"I never forged anything."

The investigator slid over another document.

"Forensic handwriting."

"Digital authentication."

"IP records."

"They all point to your office."

Grant felt his chest tighten.

"I only signed what Celeste gave me."

The investigator didn't react.

"So now it's Celeste's fault?"

Grant said nothing.

Across town...

Celeste was sitting in another interrogation room.

Unlike Grant...

She wasn't trying to protect anyone.

She was trying to save herself.

Daniel Mercer placed a recorder on the table.

"You have one opportunity."

"Tell the truth."

Celeste looked exhausted.

Mascara stained her cheeks.

"My lawyer says I should stay quiet."

Daniel nodded.

"That's your right."

"But Grant already says you planned everything."

Her head snapped up.

"He said that?"

Daniel slid over Grant's written statement.

Every sentence blamed Celeste.

She manipulated him.

She handled the accounts.

She lied about the pregnancy.

She pressured him to hide expenses.

Celeste laughed bitterly.

"So that's how it is."

She leaned back.

"Fine."

"You want the truth?"

"I'll give you all of it."

For six straight hours...

she confessed.

She explained how Grant had begged her to keep pretending the baby was his.

How Vivian promised she'd become "the queen of the Lawson family."

How Grant knowingly diverted company money to finance their new life.

She handed investigators passwords.

Emails.

Private messages.

Hidden bank accounts.

Everything.

By sunset...

the prosecution no longer needed Grant's confession.

His own accomplice had destroyed him.

Vivian still refused to believe it.

She stormed into Daniel's law office demanding answers.

"My son was manipulated!"

"You've ruined his future!"

Daniel quietly placed one photograph on the desk.

It showed Lily sleeping peacefully beside Eleanor.

Then another.

Grant kissing Celeste while Eleanor was pregnant.

Then another.

Vivian holding blue balloons labeled "Future Heir."

Daniel folded his hands.

"Mrs. Lawson..."

"Your son ruined his own future."

"You simply applauded every decision."

Vivian's face flushed.

"You can't keep my granddaughter away from me."

Daniel looked at her steadily.

"You called her 'Second Place.'"

"You mailed that bracelet yourself."

Vivian had no answer.

She quietly left the office.

For the first time in decades...

money couldn't solve anything.

The criminal trial began four months later.

The courtroom was packed.

Reporters filled every available seat.

Grant entered through the side door wearing a dark suit provided by his attorney.

He searched the gallery.

His eyes finally found Eleanor.

She wasn't looking at him.

She was smiling softly...

because Lily had just fallen asleep on her shoulder.

That hurt far more than any prison sentence.

Grant suddenly realized...

his daughter had learned to crawl.

She had probably learned to clap.

Maybe even said her first word.

He hadn't witnessed any of it.

Not because Eleanor had taken those moments away...

But because he had thrown them away himself.

When the verdict came...

the courtroom remained silent.

"Guilty."

Financial fraud.

Forgery.

Corporate theft.

Misappropriation of company assets.

Grant closed his eyes.

The judge continued.

"Five years imprisonment."

"Full restitution."

"Permanent prohibition from holding executive office."

The gavel struck.

Everything was over.

May you like

Except...

the regret that had only just begun.
