Chapter 2: Secrets Behind Closed Doors

Chapter 2: Secrets Behind Closed Doors
The following morning, Luke returned home alone.
Every room reminded him of his childhood.
Everything suddenly looked different.
He began cleaning.
Not because the house was dirty.
Because he wanted every reminder of Eleanor gone.
While emptying one of her bedroom drawers, he found a locked wooden box.
Inside were dozens of journals.
Some dated back nearly thirty years.
Curious, he opened one.
His stomach dropped.
Every page contained notes about people.
His father.
Neighbors.
Friends.
Even Luke himself.
She had recorded every mistake...
Every failure...
Every imagined insult.
Then he found entries about Natalie.
"She isn't worthy."
"She's making Luke weak."
"I must correct her before the baby arrives."
Luke could barely breathe.
His mother hadn't snapped.
She had been planning this for months.
Maybe years.
He gathered every journal.
Then drove straight to Detective Harris.
"This isn't over," he said.
The detective slowly turned each page.

"No," Harris replied quietly.
"It certainly isn't."
