# Chapter 2: The Woman in Room 814 Claire ripped the adhesive label from the fetal monitor so quickly that it tore in half. **READY FOR TRANSFER.** The words stared back at her like a death sentence. Her pulse hammered against the IV taped to her wrist. She pressed the nurse call button. Almost immediately, a young nurse hurried into the room. "Mrs. Carter? What's wrong?" Claire held up the torn label. "Who put this on my monitor?" The nurse frowned. "I've never seen that before." "You expect me to believe someone walked into my room without permission?" "I'll call security." "No." Claire shook her head. "Call Detective Mercer." The nurse hesitated only a second before nodding. --- Twenty-five minutes later, Detective Daniel Mercer entered with two hospital security officers. He studied the label carefully. "Has anyone besides staff been inside?" "Just doctors... nurses..." Claire stopped. "And one woman." "The blonde?" Claire nodded. "I saw her standing outside my room." Daniel turned toward the charge nurse. "Name?" The woman checked the overnight roster. "No blonde nurse has been assigned to Labor and Delivery tonight." "What about another floor?" Another search. Nothing. Daniel's expression hardened. "Show me the surveillance footage." --- The security office occupied a quiet corner of the basement. Dozens of monitors displayed live feeds from every hallway. An officer rewound the camera outside Claire's room. 11:42 PM. Claire's room. Empty hallway. 11:43. Still empty. 11:44. Nothing. Daniel leaned closer. "Freeze." A reflection appeared for less than half a second on the polished floor. Someone had walked past the camera. Yet no person appeared in the video. Only the distorted reflection. "Enhance that." The technician enlarged the frame. A white shoe. The edge of blue scrubs. Nothing else. "It's like..." the technician whispered. "...the camera skipped." Daniel checked the timestamps. Exactly seventeen seconds were missing. Not enough for most people to notice. Enough for someone to enter a room. Enough for someone to leave a label. Enough for someone to disappear. --- Claire refused to sleep. Every footstep outside her door made her flinch. Around three in the morning, another patient wandered into her room. An elderly woman wearing a hospital robe. Thin. Gray-haired. Confused. She clutched an IV pole as if it were a cane. "I'm sorry," Claire said gently. "I think you're in the wrong room." The woman stared at Lily's monitor. "They're watching." Claire frowned. "What?" The old woman stepped closer. "Don't let them take the baby downstairs." Claire felt a chill spread through her chest. "What do you mean?" "They told my daughter it was just another test." Her voice trembled. "They never brought the baby back." Claire's throat tightened. "When was this?" The woman looked lost. "I don't remember." A nurse hurried into the room. "There you are, Mrs. Holloway." She smiled apologetically at Claire. "I'm sorry. She has dementia." Mrs. Holloway resisted as the nurse gently guided her toward the hallway. Before disappearing, she looked back over her shoulder. "They change names." Then she was gone. --- At dawn, Daniel returned carrying a cardboard evidence box. "We searched your in-laws' house." Claire sat forward. "What did you find?" He opened the box. Inside lay the hidden recorder from beneath her dining chair. The unsigned legal documents. A broken wine glass. And something Claire had never seen before. A small silver key card. Across the front, in faded black lettering, were three words. **MATERNAL ACCESS LEVEL.** Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Claire stared at it. "My mother-in-law had this?" "It was hidden inside the dining room cabinet." Daniel folded his arms. "The strange part..." He slid over another photograph. "This card doesn't belong to any current employee." Claire looked closer. "Who does it belong to?" Daniel didn't answer immediately. Instead, he placed a personnel file on the table. The photograph showed a smiling woman in blue scrubs. Blonde hair. Kind eyes. Claire's breath caught. It was the woman she'd seen outside her room. The employment status beneath the photo read only one word. **DECEASED.** Date of death: **Four years earlier.** Silence settled between them. Claire finally whispered, "I saw her tonight." Daniel's jaw tightened. "So either someone is wearing a dead woman's identity..." He paused. "...or someone wants us to believe they are." At that exact moment, alarms erupted throughout the maternity ward. Every monitor flashed red. Doors automatically locked. A panicked voice echoed over the hospital intercom. **"Code Pink. Code Pink. Infant security alert."** A baby... Had just disappeared.
