Chapter 4 - The Truth on the Screen

At dawn, Julian led Clara through a service tunnel beneath Vale Tower.

“The private archive is behind Father’s wine vault,” he said.

“You knew it existed?”

“I knew the room existed. I believed it held tax records.”

“You believed many useful things.”

“I did.”

He did not defend himself, and that was the first honest gift he had given her all night.

The brass key opened a steel cabinet. Inside were payment ledgers, photographs of Blackthorn Cottage, and seven annual reports on Eli’s health.

Clara touched the first photograph. “He watched our son grow.”

Julian found a recorder labeled MARA Q.

Silas’s voice filled the room.

“The infant leaves before sunrise. The mother is told he died. My son signs the transfer while sedated.”

Mara’s younger voice answered, “That is kidnapping.”

“It is preservation.”

Clara stopped the recording.

“We have him.”

“Not yet.” Julian held up a second ledger. “Theo authorized every payment after Father’s stroke last year.”

“So Theo knew.”

“And the custody hearing begins at noon.”

Clara called Detective Naomi Reed, the officer who had once questioned the missing cremation certificate and been removed from the case.

“I need ten minutes and a projector,” Clara said.

Reed answered, “I need evidence I can authenticate.”

“You will have the originals.”

“And the child?”

“Silas will bring him to the foundation auditorium for the hearing.”

Julian looked at Clara. “Father owns the building.”

She held up the recorder. “Then let the building testify.”

At noon, reporters crowded the auditorium. Silas sat beside Eli at a long table, one hand resting heavily on the boy’s shoulder.

Clara rolled down the center aisle.

Silas leaned toward the microphone. “This proceeding concerns a vulnerable child, not a family spectacle.”

“You created the spectacle when you stole him,” Clara said.

The room erupted.

Julian joined her. Silas’s eyes narrowed.

“You will lose your company,” Silas said.

“I already instructed the board to freeze my shares.”

“You would burn your inheritance for an accusation?”

“For my son.”

Eli looked up.

Clara reached the front table. “Theo, tell them who sent you to the archive.”

Theo stood beside the screen, pale and sweating. “I do not know what you mean.”

Julian pressed a remote. Bank transfers appeared behind him.

Theo read his own authorization code.

Silas said quietly, “Sit down.”

Theo remained standing.

“You told me the boy was dangerous,” he said. “You said Mara planned to extort the family.”

“And you believed him?” Clara asked.

“At first.”

“What changed?”

“I saw Eli’s reports. I knew he was the missing baby.”

“Yet you warned Silas.”

Theo’s voice cracked. “He threatened my daughter’s medical trust.”

Silas rose. “Enough.”

Julian played the recording.

Silas’s own words rolled across the silent auditorium: The mother is told he died. My son signs the transfer while sedated.

Eli stared at him. “You knew where I was every birthday.”

Silas gripped the table. “I paid for your care.”

“You paid to keep me quiet.”

“I protected you from chaos.”

Clara’s voice trembled. “You protected your name.”

Silas faced the cameras. “Clara was unstable. Julian was abandoning his future. The baby was premature and needed resources they did not have.”

“So you gave him to a frightened nurse in a cottage?” Julian asked.

“I intended a proper placement. Mara disappeared with him.”

Mara’s face appeared live on the screen from her hospital bed.

“You ordered Ruth to keep him hidden,” she said. “I have the letters.”

Detective Reed entered with two officers.

“Silas Vale, step away from the child.”

Silas pulled Eli against him. “You still have not proved whose child he is.”

Clara held up the blanket cloth. “We have blood from the clinic sample and DNA from all three of us.”

“The result is not back,” Reed warned.

Silas smiled for the first time.

“That woman gave birth during a fire. Mara moved several infants. Ruth could have given this boy any trinket she pleased.”

Eli’s hope vanished behind a careful, empty expression.

Clara reached for him.

Silas shoved the table into the aisle and dragged Eli through the stage door.

Julian started after them.

Detective Reed drew her radio. “Lock the garage. No one leaves the tower.”

Clara gripped her wheels and followed.

Behind her, the screen still displayed Silas’s confession.

Ahead, one final question ran with them into the dark: had they found their son, or only another child Silas had used?
