Part 4: The Lie That Built an Empire

Part 4: The Lie That Built an Empire

The notebook slipped from the elderly man's trembling hands.

It landed softly on the marble floor.

No one rushed to pick it up.

No one dared to speak.

Every eye in the Hale Regency Hotel remained fixed on Victoria.

For years, she had controlled every room she entered with confidence and authority.

Now, she looked like someone desperately searching for a way to escape.

"That's a lie," she said quietly.

But the conviction was gone from her voice.

The elderly man looked at the page again.

"I don't think it is."

He carefully read another passage.

"'If anyone ever finds this notebook, please know that I never abandoned my daughter or my family. I left because I was given only two choices. Leave... or watch everything I loved be destroyed.'"

A murmur spread through the crowd.

Victoria shook her head.

"Stop reading."

The man lowered the notebook.

"Did you write this?"

"No."

"Then who did?"

Victoria said nothing.

Emma looked at Eleanor.

"Mrs. Eleanor... why is everyone looking at Aunt Victoria like that?"

The word Aunt sent another wave of surprise through the lobby.

Victoria slowly turned toward Emma.

"Who told you to call me that?"

"My mommy."

Emma answered without hesitation.

"She said you were my aunt."

Victoria's lips parted, but no words came out.

For a long moment, she simply stared at the little girl.

The resemblance was impossible to ignore now.

The same dark eyes.

The same gentle curve of the eyebrows.

Even the small dimple on Emma's left cheek looked hauntingly familiar.

Guests who had been watching from a distance suddenly noticed it too.

"They look alike."

"They have the same eyes."

"I can't believe I didn't see it before."

Victoria lowered her gaze.

She had spent years avoiding that face.

Now she couldn't look away.

Eleanor picked up the notebook and held it against her chest.

"There is no point pretending anymore."

Victoria's shoulders stiffened.

"You don't know everything."

"Then tell us."

Silence.

"You've hidden from the truth for seven years."

Another silence.

Finally, Victoria whispered,

"My father destroyed Amelia."

The lobby became still.

Eleanor looked at her sadly.

"No."

"He did."

Victoria's voice cracked.

"When Amelia refused to marry the man our father chose for her, he cut her off completely."

Emma listened carefully, trying to understand.

Victoria continued, her eyes fixed on the floor.

"He told her she was no longer his daughter."

"He erased her from every family record."

"He made every employee sign agreements never to mention her name."

Several guests exchanged stunned glances.

The hotel manager slowly sat down.

He suddenly understood why no one had ever heard of Amelia Hale.

She hadn't disappeared by accident.

She had been erased on purpose.

Eleanor nodded slowly.

"That part is true."

Victoria looked up.

"But that's not the whole story."

Eleanor's expression became firmer.

"No."

"It isn't."

"You could have gone after her."

"You could have helped her."

"You could have protected your sister."

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"I was twenty-three."

"I was terrified."

"Our father said if I contacted Amelia, he'd destroy me too."

"You believed him."

"I did."

"And what happened after he died?"

Victoria froze.

No answer came.

Eleanor stepped closer.

"What stopped you then?"

Victoria closed her eyes.

"Shame."

The single word echoed through the silent lobby.

"I searched for her."

She swallowed.

"But by the time I finally tried... she was gone."

Emma frowned.

"My mommy wasn't gone."

Victoria looked at the child.

"Where is she?"

Emma slowly lowered her head.

"She's sick."

The words were so soft that several people almost missed them.

"Very sick."

Victoria's heart seemed to stop.

"What do you mean?"

Emma reached into the handbag one final time.

At the very bottom was a sealed medical envelope from a cancer treatment center.

Her small fingers held it out.

"My mommy said if I found you..."

The little girl struggled to keep her voice steady.

"...I should tell you she doesn't have much time left."

Victoria stared at the envelope without moving.

Her hands trembled violently.

Then Emma spoke the sentence that shattered whatever remained of Victoria's composure.

"She said..."

The child blinked back tears.

"...she still loves her big sister."

The envelope slipped from Emma's fingers onto the marble floor.

At that exact moment, Victoria Hale collapsed to her knees.
