Chapter 7 - JULIA’S WARNING

Julia had never told me about the memorandum.

Eleanor explained why.

“She believed you would confront Grant before evidence existed.”

“She was right.”

“She also believed he would persuade you she was being emotional.”

That was harder to hear.

During Julia’s final year, Grant repeatedly argued that the riverfront parcel should enter Brody Urban’s development portfolio.

Julia refused.

He described her as overprotective and irrational from treatment stress.

I defended him because he had saved the company during the recession.

After Julia died, he stopped mentioning the land openly.

He waited.

Eleanor provided emails.

Grant had contacted Hawthorne Ridge eighteen months before I met Meredith. He asked whether severe pediatric psychiatric illness could justify trust conversion and sale of restricted assets.

The clinic’s lawyer answered that it depended on medical necessity and judicial approval.

Grant then introduced Meredith to Dr. Vale.

The conspiracy predated our marriage.

Maeve’s nursing agency suspended her pending review for entering the assignment with an undisclosed personal motive.

She accepted the suspension and remained away from the house except for interviews.

Tanner reacted badly.

“She’s being punished for helping.”

“She is being reviewed for what she hid.”

“So are you?”

The question cut cleanly.

Child services required parenting education, medical-decision oversight, and therapy.

Brody Urban’s board investigated my governance.

But I still lived in my home, held my title, and controlled enormous resources.

Maeve lost her income immediately.

Consequences were not equal because our positions were not equal.

“I should face review too,” I said.

“Are you?”

“Yes.”

“Does it hurt?”

“Yes.”

He seemed unconvinced.

Police searched Grant’s office and penthouse.

They found River Arc documents, encrypted messages, and a schedule matching Tanner’s episodes.

Every line began with a date and ended with a number.

3 drops.

4 drops.

5 drops.

The doses increased after each hospital failed to detect the compound.

Notes described Tanner’s reaction.

CRAMPS WITHOUT DELIRIUM.

TACTILE LANGUAGE INCREASING.

FATHER STILL REQUESTING MEDICAL TESTS.

MEREDITH TO PUSH PSYCHIATRIC FRAME.

The observations came partly from me.

I had texted Meredith during work.

Tanner says it feels like worms tonight.

He slept after two hours.

ER found nothing again.

She forwarded my words to Grant and Vale.

My concern became dosage feedback.

Grant’s search produced no dark bottles.

Detectives found two inside Maeve’s apartment.

They sat beneath her bathroom sink beside stolen hospital syringes.

Maeve was arrested for possession of controlled compounds and theft of medical supplies.

Meredith’s attorney immediately issued a statement.

The nurse who accused her had been carrying the same poison all along.

For six hours, even I wondered whether the woman who saved Tanner had created the danger she claimed to expose.

Then police recovered hallway footage from Maeve’s building.

Grant entered her apartment two days earlier using a maintenance master key.

Meredith walked in behind him.

They remained inside for eleven minutes.

Before leaving, Meredith kissed him.
