CHAPTER 3: THE TRUTH

The emergency audit lasted three weeks.

One by one, hidden accounts surfaced.

Entire shell corporations collapsed overnight.

Several executives quietly resigned before investigators reached them.

Others weren't fast enough.

Federal authorities arrived before sunrise.

Handcuffs replaced executive badges.

News channels called it the largest corporate scandal of the decade.

Damian watched every headline from the small apartment he had rented after losing everything.

His luxury mansion had already been sold.

His sports cars were gone.

Friends stopped answering his calls.

Even Veronica disappeared without leaving a message.

Only then did he understand.

People had never loved him.

They had loved his power.

One rainy afternoon, Damian received an unexpected visitor.

Elena.

She entered carrying a single envelope.

"I didn't come to humiliate you."

"I came because you deserve the truth."

Damian stared at her.

"You could have destroyed me years ago."

"I could have."

"Why didn't you?"

Elena looked toward the rain-covered window.

"Because I believed people could change."

A long silence passed.

"You disappointed me."

She placed the envelope on the table.

Inside was a copy of the company's original founding agreement.

Her signature.

Her father's signature.

And another name.

Damian's late mentor.

The man who had convinced Damian that Elena was nothing more than a symbolic shareholder.

"He lied to both of us," Elena said.

"He used your ambition."

"He used my trust."

Damian slowly lowered his head.

For the first time in years...

He cried.

Not because he had lost his fortune.

Because he finally understood what he had become.

When Elena stood to leave, Damian stopped her.

"I'm sorry."

She paused at the door.

"I know."

May you like

"But some apologies arrive after they've lost the power to change anything."

Then she walked away forever.
