CHAPTER 3: THE MAN ALEJANDRO CALLED BROTHER

Alejandro refused to let Elena go.

Vivian’s message directed them to an abandoned Castillo hotel at the edge of the city. The property had closed after a fire twelve years earlier and was scheduled for demolition.

“She asked for me,” Elena said.

“She held you for three years. You’re not walking back into her hands.”

“She doesn’t only want the ledger.”

“What else?”

Elena looked at the letter from Alejandro’s father.

“She wants the last account number.”

The ledger recorded hundreds of illegal transactions, but several pages had been torn out.

The missing pages identified the master account holding the remaining funds.

Elena had discovered the number before she was taken.

She had memorized it, then destroyed the paper.

Vivian believed Elena still remembered.

Alejandro contacted Detective Bennett and arranged a controlled exchange. The ledger placed in the briefcase would be a copy. Tracking devices were hidden inside its cover and handle.

At eleven forty-five, Alejandro and Elena arrived at the abandoned hotel.

Detectives surrounded the property from a distance.

The lobby smelled of smoke, damp wood and old plaster. Torn curtains shifted in the broken windows.

A single portable light illuminated the reception desk.

Vivian stepped from behind a column.

Her cream clothing had been replaced by a dark coat. Her blonde hair was wet from the rain.

Beside her stood Gabriel Castillo.

Alejandro stopped.

Gabriel had been his closest friend since childhood.

They had attended the same schools, lived in neighboring rooms and joined the family company together.

Gabriel smiled sadly.

“I wish you had stayed in London.”

Alejandro looked at the weapon in his cousin’s hand.

“You helped her.”

“I protected this family.”

“You locked Elena in a room.”

“That was Vivian’s decision.”

Vivian glanced at him.

“A decision you benefited from.”

Gabriel’s jaw tightened.

The alliance between them was already breaking.

Elena stepped closer to Alejandro.

“You controlled the security cameras,” she said. “You knew where I was.”

Gabriel avoided her eyes.

“At first, I believed Vivian would send you away.”

“You watched Alejandro search for me.”

“I kept him alive.”

Alejandro stared at him.

“Explain that.”

Gabriel revealed that the Moretti network had powerful partners outside the Castillo family. When Elena found the ledger, several of them wanted both her and Alejandro permanently silenced.

Gabriel claimed he convinced Vivian that keeping Elena hidden was safer.

“You expect gratitude?” Alejandro asked.

“I expect you to understand that your father created this. I inherited the disaster.”

“No. You inherited a choice.”

Gabriel’s expression hardened.

“And I chose the company.”

Alejandro placed the briefcase on the reception desk.

“Here’s your ledger. Let Elena leave.”

Vivian opened the case and flipped through the pages.

“These are copies.”

“They’re enough to put you away.”

Vivian smiled.

“Not without the original account number.”

Elena studied her carefully.

For three years, Vivian had controlled the room, the locks, the medicine and the food.

But tonight, Vivian’s hand trembled.

Her money was frozen.

Her allies were turning against her.

For the first time, she was afraid.

Elena stepped forward.

“I remember the number.”

Alejandro looked at her, but she gave him a subtle nod.

Vivian raised her head.

“Say it.”

“Let Alejandro go first.”

Vivian laughed.

“You still don’t understand. Alejandro was never leaving this building.”

Gabriel turned toward her.

“That wasn’t the agreement.”

“There is no agreement anymore.”

She reached inside her coat.

Gabriel grabbed her wrist.

The weapon fired into the ceiling.

Detectives stormed the hotel.

Vivian broke free and ran through a service corridor. Gabriel dropped his weapon and raised his hands.

Alejandro followed Vivian despite Detective Bennett ordering him to stop.

He found her in the hotel’s old ballroom.

Rain poured through a hole in the roof.

Vivian stood near the collapsed stage, holding a small silver device.

“Don’t come closer,” she warned.

“What is that?”

“A remote trigger.”

She claimed explosives had been placed in the basement years earlier when the building was scheduled for demolition.

Alejandro did not know whether she was lying.

Elena entered behind him.

Vivian pointed the device toward her.

“You ruined everything.”

Elena remained calm.

“No. I remembered everything.”

“You were supposed to forget.”

“You should have understood something about me.”

Vivian’s thumb rested over the button.

“What?”

“I was never waiting for Alejandro to save me.”

Elena held up her phone.

During their conversation in the lobby, she had entered the master account number into a secure government portal prepared by Detective Bennett.

The hidden funds were already being seized.

Vivian looked at her own phone.

A notification confirmed that the account had been locked.

Her face collapsed.

“No.”

“It’s over,” Elena said.

Vivian pressed the button.

Nothing happened.

Gabriel had told the truth about one thing: the explosives had been removed years earlier.

Detectives entered the ballroom and surrounded her.

Vivian stared at the useless device in her hand.

Then she looked at Elena.

“You have no idea how difficult it is to build power.”

Elena answered quietly.

“You never built power. You built rooms people were afraid to leave.”

Vivian was taken into custody.

In the lobby, officers placed Gabriel in handcuffs.

Before they led him away, he looked at Alejandro.

“I saved your life.”

Alejandro shook his head.

“You only found a way to live with betraying it.”

Gabriel was escorted outside.

Detective Bennett approached Elena.

“We traced the account immediately. But there’s a problem.”

“What problem?” Alejandro asked.

“Someone transferred part of the money two hours before the freeze.”

“To where?”

Bennett showed them the destination.

The funds had been sent to an account in Elena’s name.

Vivian had created one final piece of evidence designed to frame her.

By morning, every major news outlet would report that the missing Mrs. Castillo had returned with millions of stolen charity dollars connected to her identity.

Vivian might be behind bars.

But her final trap had already been set.
