Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Empire

The aftermath of the summit was a corporate execution. Within three hours of Matthew’s presentation, the Securities and Exchange Commission issued an emergency trading halt on Vale Group stock, but not before the company’s valuation had cratered by over four billion dollars. By mid-afternoon, federal agents accompanied by state police arrived at the Lincoln Center, executing search warrants for the company’s headquarters and Alexander Vale’s private residences.

Alexander was arrested in the green room behind the stage, led out through the back exit in handcuffs, his face covered by a jacket to shield him from the relentless lenses of the paparazzi. The charges were staggering: securities fraud, grand larceny, corporate conspiracy, and child endangerment based on the unedited Phase III medical logs that explicitly detailed his awareness of the device's physical dangers.

Victoria Vance and the entire board of directors were terminated within forty-eight hours as an emergency receivership took control of the company’s assets to prevent total liquidation.

Back at the Greenwich estate, the silence was no longer heavy; it was absolute. The security guards had vanished, their contracts voided by the bankruptcy court. The corporate cars were gone. The grand mansion sat behind its iron gates like a hollow monument to a fallen king.

Clara Harper stood in the center of the grand kitchen, watching the news broadcast on a small television. When the screen showed Matthew’s live ASL speech from the summit, followed by the reporter’s praise for the "courageous young whistleblower," Clara turned to look at her daughter, who was sitting at the kitchen island, quietly reading her great-grandfather’s poetry book.

"You knew," Clara whispered, the realization hitting her with the force of a physical blow. "The midnight walk in the gallery... the files... Lucy, you helped him do this."

Lucy looked up, her expression calm and steady. "He would have been hurt, Mom. His father was going to let them destroy his brain just to keep the stock price high. Great-grandfather Samuel said we never leave anyone behind. Matthew is my friend."

Clara walked over, her eyes shining with tears, and pulled Lucy into a fierce, tight embrace. "You could have been ruined, sweetheart. We could have been thrown out on the street."

"We’re still here, Mom," Lucy said against her shoulder. "And so is Matthew."

The door to the kitchen opened softly. Matthew stood in the frame, accompanied by an elderly man with kind eyes and a warm tweed jacket. This was Dr. Thomas Sterling, a renowned human rights attorney and a close friend of Matthew’s late mother, who had been appointed by the court as the boy’s temporary legal guardian following Alexander’s arrest.

Matthew didn't look like the corporate prince anymore. He was wearing an oversized sweater and simple jeans, his hair messy, but his eyes were brighter than Lucy had ever seen them.

He looked at Lucy, lifted his hand, and signed a single, beautiful word: Free.
