Chapter 1: The Perfect Scapegoat

When Emma Carter married Daniel Harrington, everyone believed she had found the perfect life.

The Harrington family was one of California's oldest and wealthiest dynasties. They owned luxury resorts, commercial real estate, and a respected charitable foundation. Their name appeared in business magazines, charity galas, and society columns every year.

To outsiders, Emma was the lucky woman who had married into privilege.

Only she knew that the Harrington mansion wasn't a home.

It was a stage.

And every day, she was expected to play the villain.

Daniel's mother, Margaret Harrington, was admired throughout the city.

Elegant.

Graceful.

Generous in public.

But behind the closed doors of the family estate, she became someone entirely different.

Every mistake somehow became Emma's fault.

If dinner arrived late...

"It must be because Emma distracted the staff."

If a business guest felt uncomfortable...

"Emma doesn't understand our family's standards."

If Margaret misplaced something...

She would sigh dramatically before saying,

"I'm sure no one meant any harm..."

Then she would slowly glance toward Emma.

She never accused her directly.

She didn't have to.

Daniel's younger sister, Chloe Harrington, had perfected the art of playing the victim.

She was charming, beautiful, and knew exactly how to manipulate every room she entered.

Whenever tension arose, Chloe would lower her voice, her eyes would fill with tears, and she would whisper,

"I don't want anyone to get into trouble because of me."

The family immediately rushed to comfort her.

And somehow, the conversation always ended with Emma apologizing for something she hadn't done.

Chloe never needed evidence.

She only needed tears.

At first, Emma believed kindness would eventually win their hearts.

She remained patient.

She stayed respectful.

She apologized even when she had done nothing wrong.

She thought love required sacrifice.

What she didn't realize...

Was that every apology convinced the Harringtons they could push her a little further.

Every silence became permission.

Every act of forgiveness became another weapon they could use against her.

Emma had entered the Harrington family hoping to become a daughter.

Instead...

She had become the perfect scapegoat.
