Chapter 3 - The Ghostly Blueprint

By the time the first pale rays of dawn broke through the clouds over Mexico City, the federal authorities had secretly removed Iván Robles from the property in an unmarked van. The corporate landscape of the Cárdenas empire was about to experience an earthquake, but inside the mansion, Alejandro was focused on a different kind of excavation.

He had spent the remaining hours of the night listening to every single file on the flash drive. Ramiro’s logs were thorough. The former security chief had recorded everything out of a sense of self-preservation, detailing how a faction of the corporate board—led by a powerful billionaire named Hugo Vance—had orchestrated Mariana’s death to force Alejandro into selling his majority stakes during his period of mourning.

But there was one final file that Ramiro had left, recorded just days before he went into hiding.

"Alejandro," Ramiro’s rough voice spoke from the laptop. "If you’re hearing this, it means my brother failed, or you finally found the box. I couldn't save Mrs. Mariana. By the time I realized what Iván was doing with Vance, the poison was already in her system. But I didn't let her die alone. I was in the room before Iván got there. She gave me a message for you. She said the piano isn't just an instrument. It’s a vault. She hid the original engineering patents for the new logistics software—the one Vance is killing for—inside the soundboard. The password is the date you met. Don't trust the lawyers, Alejandro. They are all in Vance’s pocket."

Alejandro stood up and walked out of the study, his movements purposeful. He descended the grand staircase and walked straight back into the blue living room.

Clara was there, sitting on the edge of the sofa, having refused to sleep. She looked exhausted, her eyes red, but she rose immediately when Alejandro entered.

"Mr. Alejandro," she whispered. "Are... are we in danger? Should I take Luz and leave?"

Alejandro looked at her. For four years, he had looked past this woman, seeing her only as a shadow moving through his corridors, an annoyance because her child’s laughter reminded him of the family he would never have. Now, he realized she was the living shield that had kept his wife’s final truth alive.

"You are not leaving, Clara," Alejandro said, his tone softening significantly. "You and Luz are under my permanent protection. The men who threatened Ramiro are going to prison, and you will never have to hide in a service wing again."

He walked over to the old black piano. With a firm grip, he lifted the heavy wooden music stand, exposing the inner workings of the instrument—the copper strings, the felt hammers, and the thick spruce soundboard.

He ran his fingers along the back of the casing until his knuckles hit a small, artificial indentation near the highest treble strings. It was a digital keypad, expertly concealed beneath a layer of polished ebony wood.

The screen blinked to life, requesting an eight-digit pin.

Alejandro didn't hesitate. He typed in the date he had first laid eyes on Mariana at a charity gala in Guadalajara: 12042018.

A heavy mechanical click echoed from within the piano's belly. A false panel at the base of the soundboard swung open, revealing a thick leather satchel filled with original, stamped patent documents, proprietary source code drives, and a personal letter written in Mariana’s elegant cursive handwriting.

Alejandro pulled the letter out, his eyes stinging as he read the first line: To my beautiful Alejandro, if you are reading this, the downpour has passed, and it’s time for you to live again.

But before he could read further, Doña Remedios rushed into the room, her breath coming in short, panicked gasps.

"Mr. Alejandro! There are three black luxury sedans at the main gate. They aren't the police. It’s Hugo Vance. He’s demanding to see you, and his men are armed."
