Chapter 7: The Revelation of the Past

Clara’s fingers brushed the cool metal of the necklace, and a sob ripped through her chest, one that had been held for ten years. "They told me you were gone," she wept, her voice echoing in the hall. "The hospital, the wreckage... I thought I lost everything." Emily looked at the old woman, a sudden, sharp ache blooming in her chest. The memories, once buried under the weight of Veronica’s cruelty, began to surface—the laughter, the warm kitchen, the scent of lavender and old paper.

Daniel watched the interaction, his hands clasped tightly behind his back. The realization was heavy: Emily wasn't just a girl who had been abandoned; she was a victim of a much larger, more systemic web of lies. "Who told you she was dead, Clara?" he asked, his voice low, his investigator’s instincts surfacing. He turned toward the guards holding Veronica, who had stopped in the doorway, staring at the scene with a mix of fear and confusion.

Veronica’s face went even paler. She had orchestrated many things, but she hadn't known about the locket. She had picked Emily up from a state-run home, thinking the girl was a nameless orphan, never bothering to check the records. The mistake was fatal. Daniel’s eyes flickered with a dark realization. If Emily wasn't an orphan, then everything Veronica had told him about her arrival was a fabrication designed to hide the truth of where the girl came from. The mansion was no longer just a home; it was a crime scene.
