The Ultrasound Report Named the One Man Marcus Never Suspected

The tiny blue jacket slipped from Marcus Henderson’s fingers and landed beside the examination table.

No one bent down to pick it up.

The ultrasound monitor continued pulsing with the steady rhythm of the unborn baby’s heartbeat, but the room itself seemed to have stopped breathing.

Dr.

Vance held the laboratory report with both hands.

His face remained professionally neutral, yet his silence confirmed that the line he had just read was not a minor discrepancy.

Marcus stared at him.

“Say it again.”

“The prenatal paternity analysis excludes you as the biological father,” Dr.

Vance repeated.

“The laboratory ran the comparison twice using independently labeled samples.

The probability of paternity is zero.”

Penelope’s hand flew to her throat.

“That can’t be right.”

Marcus turned toward her so slowly that everyone in the room instinctively moved back.

“You told me you were certain.”

“I am certain,” she said quickly.

“There has to be a mistake.”

Roxanne snatched the report from the doctor’s hand and scanned the first page.

Her usual smirk was gone.

Their mother, Evelyn, leaned over her shoulder, while Marcus’s father remained near the door, gripping the handle of his cane.

“Run another test,” Evelyn ordered.

“We will pay for the best laboratory in the country.”

Dr.

Vance’s tone stayed measured.

“You already did.

The first sample was sent to an independent laboratory at Mr.

Henderson’s request.

The second was processed here after the initial result came back.

They match.”

Marcus looked at Penelope’s swollen belly, then at the roses he had placed near her bed.

Only an hour earlier, he had called the baby the future of the Henderson family.

He had invited relatives to witness the appointment because he wanted an audience for his triumph.

Now every witness was watching him unravel.

Penelope reached for his wrist.

“Marcus, listen to me.”

He pulled away.

“Who is the father?”

She looked toward the door.

That movement was small, but Roxanne saw it.

She flipped to the second page of the report and froze.

“There’s a signature here,” she whispered.

Dr.

Vance extended his hand.

“That page is part of the chain-of-custody record.”

Roxanne ignored him.

She held the paper closer to her face.

Beside the line marked emergency contact was a familiar name written in slanted black ink.

Adrian Henderson.

Marcus’s younger brother.

For years, Adrian had been the family embarrassment—the charming second son who drifted between cities, failed at several businesses, and appeared whenever he needed money.

Marcus treated him with a mixture of contempt and superiority.

Penelope had once claimed she barely knew him.

Marcus read the name over Roxanne’s shoulder.

His face emptied.

“No.”

Penelope began shaking her head before he even looked at her.

“He only drove me to the clinic once.

That doesn’t mean anything.”

The clinic door opened.

Adrian stepped inside wearing a gray jacket and an expression that suggested he had been hoping to arrive after the appointment ended.

He stopped when he saw the entire family staring at him.

Marcus crossed the room in three strides.

“Tell me you only drove her here.”

Adrian glanced at Penelope.

That was all the answer Marcus needed.

He seized the front of Adrian’s jacket, but their father struck his cane against the tile.

May you like

“Not here.”

A nurse appeared in the doorway behind Adrian.
