Chapter 2: The Stranger at the Door

The doorbell rang again.

I tried to answer, but another contraction stole my breath.

Then I heard a voice outside.

"Ma'am? Are you okay? I heard someone screaming."

It was our next-door neighbor, Mrs. Evelyn Carter.

Somehow, she had heard my cries while watering her garden.

"I... help..." I whispered.

She immediately tried the front door.

Locked.

Without hesitation, she called 911.

Within minutes, firefighters arrived and forced the door open.

They found me barely conscious on the living room floor.

"My babies..." I whispered.

"We've got you," one paramedic said calmly.

"You and your twins."

The medical team moved with incredible speed.

One paramedic started an IV while another monitored the babies' heartbeats.

"There are signs of fetal distress," she told the emergency physician over the radio.

"We're transporting immediately."

The ambulance sped toward the hospital with lights flashing.

During the ride, I faded in and out of consciousness.

The last thing I remembered was someone squeezing my hand.

"Stay with us, Mom."
