Chapter 8 – The Ultimate Betrayal

The courtroom was packed. Unlike the quiet, peaceful courthouse visit a year ago, this was a media circus. Reporters lined the hallways, microphones pushed forward every time Daniel or I took a step.

Marcus sat at the plaintiff's table, looking smugly confident. Next to him, to our absolute horror, sat Patricia and Harold. They had agreed to testify for Marcus, claiming that Daniel had used unethical financial influence to speed up the adoption process. It was a knife to the heart, but Daniel kept his chin high, his grip on my hand ironclad.

Lily was not in the courtroom; we refused to subject her to the venomous environment.

Marcus's lawyer took the podium, painting a picture of a wealthy elite couple who manipulated a vulnerable biological father out of his parental rights. Then, Patricia took the stand. She looked at Daniel with cold, calculated eyes.

"My son is a proud man," Patricia testified, her voice dripping with false sorrow. "He wanted a perfect family so badly that he ignored the ethical boundaries. We believe Marcus was pressured into signing away his rights under financial duress from Daniel's legal team."

A gasp ran through the courtroom. It was a blatant lie, but it sounded damaging.

Then, it was our turn. Daniel’s lawyer, a sharp woman named Sarah, stood up. She didn't look flustered. Instead, she produced a heavily encrypted hard drive.

"Your Honor," Sarah announced, "we submit into evidence a series of recorded phone calls and text messages obtained via legal subpoena from the plaintiff’s phone over the last forty-eight hours."

Marcus’s lawyer jumped up to object, but the judge overruled it.

Sarah pressed play on the audio system. Marcus’s voice filled the courtroom, clear and arrogant. He was speaking to Harold, Daniel's father.

"...Once Whitman gives me the five million to drop the lawsuit, I’ll give you your twenty percent cut for backing me up in court. The kid doesn't matter. She's just the golden ticket. Whitman will pay anything to keep her name clean."

The courtroom erupted into chaos. Flashes went off. Reporters began furiously typing. Marcus turned pale as a sheet, looking desperately at his lawyer, who was already packing up his briefcase. Patricia and Harold looked as if they had seen a ghost. They had been caught in a federal conspiracy to commit extortion.

The judge slammed her gavel down, her face dark with rage. "Silence! Order in the court!"

When the room quieted, the judge looked at Marcus, then at Patricia and Harold. "This is the most disgusting display of greed and malice I have ever witnessed in this chamber. Not only is this petition dismissed with prejudice, but I am referring this matter immediately to the District Attorney for criminal extortion charges."

Daniel breathed out a long, shaky sigh, burying his face in his hands. It was over. The truth had won.
