# Chapter 2: The Woman in Room 814 Claire ripped the adhesive label from the fetal monitor so quickly that it tore in half. **READY FOR TRANSFER.** The words stared back at her like a death sentence. Her pulse hammered against the IV taped to her wrist. She pressed the nurse call button. Almost immediately, a young nurse hurried into the room. "Mrs. Carter? What's wrong?" Claire held up the torn label. "Who put this on my monitor?" The nurse frowned. "I've never seen that before." "You expect me to believe someone walked into my room without permission?" "I'll call security." "No." Claire shook her head. "Call Detective Mercer." The nurse hesitated only a second before nodding. --- Twenty-five minutes later, Detective Daniel Mercer entered with two hospital security officers. He studied the label carefully. "Has anyone besides staff been inside?" "Just doctors... nurses..." Claire stopped. "And one woman." "The blonde?" Claire nodded. "I saw her standing outside my room." Daniel turned toward the charge nurse. "Name?" The woman checked the overnight roster. "No blonde nurse has been assigned to Labor and Delivery tonight." "What about another floor?" Another search. Nothing. Daniel's expression hardened. "Show me the surveillance footage." --- The security office occupied a quiet corner of the basement. Dozens of monitors displayed live feeds from every hallway. An officer rewound the camera outside Claire's room. 11:42 PM. Claire's room. Empty hallway. 11:43. Still empty. 11:44. Nothing. Daniel leaned closer. "Freeze." A reflection appeared for less than half a second on the polished floor. Someone had walked past the camera. Yet no person appeared in the video. Only the distorted reflection. "Enhance that." The technician enlarged the frame. A white shoe. The edge of blue scrubs. Nothing else. "It's like..." the technician whispered. "...the camera skipped." Daniel checked the timestamps. Exactly seventeen seconds were missing. Not enough for most people to notice. Enough for someone to enter a room. Enough for someone to leave a label. Enough for someone to disappear. --- Claire refused to sleep. Every footstep outside her door made her flinch. Around three in the morning, another patient wandered into her room. An elderly woman wearing a hospital robe. Thin. Gray-haired. Confused. She clutched an IV pole as if it were a cane. "I'm sorry," Claire said gently. "I think you're in the wrong room." The woman stared at Lily's monitor. "They're watching." Claire frowned. "What?" The old woman stepped closer. "Don't let them take the baby downstairs." Claire felt a chill spread through her chest. "What do you mean?" "They told my daughter it was just another test." Her voice trembled. "They never brought the baby back." Claire's throat tightened. "When was this?" The woman looked lost. "I don't remember." A nurse hurried into the room. "There you are, Mrs. Holloway." She smiled apologetically at Claire. "I'm sorry. She has dementia." Mrs. Holloway resisted as the nurse gently guided her toward the hallway. Before disappearing, she looked back over her shoulder. "They change names." Then she was gone. --- At dawn, Daniel returned carrying a cardboard evidence box. "We searched your in-laws' house." Claire sat forward. "What did you find?" He opened the box. Inside lay the hidden recorder from beneath her dining chair. The unsigned legal documents. A broken wine glass. And something Claire had never seen before. A small silver key card. Across the front, in faded black lettering, were three words. **MATERNAL ACCESS LEVEL.** Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Claire stared at it. "My mother-in-law had this?" "It was hidden inside the dining room cabinet." Daniel folded his arms. "The strange part..." He slid over another photograph. "This card doesn't belong to any current employee." Claire looked closer. "Who does it belong to?" Daniel didn't answer immediately. Instead, he placed a personnel file on the table. The photograph showed a smiling woman in blue scrubs. Blonde hair. Kind eyes. Claire's breath caught. It was the woman she'd seen outside her room. The employment status beneath the photo read only one word. **DECEASED.** Date of death: **Four years earlier.** Silence settled between them. Claire finally whispered, "I saw her tonight." Daniel's jaw tightened. "So either someone is wearing a dead woman's identity..." He paused. "...or someone wants us to believe they are." At that exact moment, alarms erupted throughout the maternity ward. Every monitor flashed red. Doors automatically locked. A panicked voice echoed over the hospital intercom. **"Code Pink. Code Pink. Infant security alert."** A baby... Had just disappeared. / Chapter 2 / 9

Chapter 3: The Code Pink

Chapter 3: The Code Pink

The first scream echoed down the maternity wing before the announcement had even finished.

"Code Pink! Code Pink! Infant Security Alert!"

Every automatic door slammed shut.

Magnetic locks clicked into place.

Red warning lights began flashing across the ceiling.

Nurses abandoned their stations and rushed into the corridor.

Claire's heart nearly stopped.

"Lily..."

She grabbed the fetal monitor strapped across her stomach.

"Is my baby okay?"

A nurse hurried into the room.

"Mrs. Carter, stay in bed."

"No!"

Claire swung her legs over the side despite the pain shooting through her ribs.

"My baby!"

"Your daughter hasn't been born yet," the nurse said gently. "The alarm isn't for her."

That should have comforted Claire.

Instead, it made everything worse.

If someone could steal a newborn from the maternity ward...

What would stop them from coming back for Lily?

Detective Mercer was already running toward the neonatal unit when another officer intercepted him.

"Room 814."

Mercer frowned.

"What about it?"

"The missing baby came from Room 814."

He stopped.

"Who are the parents?"

The officer glanced at his notes.

"Mother checked in yesterday."

"Name?"

"Emily Lawson."

Mercer's face went blank.

"There is no Emily Lawson admitted to this hospital."

The officer swallowed.

"Exactly."

Hospital staff searched every hallway.

Every elevator.

Every stairwell.

Every exit remained sealed.

No infant.

No kidnapper.

Nothing.

It was as if the baby had vanished inside a building designed to make that impossible.

Claire watched the chaos through the glass of her room.

Doctors rushed past.

Security guards shouted into radios.

Then she noticed something strange.

Nobody entered Room 814.

Its door remained slightly open.

Lights off.

Completely silent.

A maintenance worker wheeled a cart past it without even looking inside.

Claire pressed the call button.

The nurse returned.

"What happened in Room 814?"

The woman froze.

"Who told you about that room?"

"I heard security."

"There isn't a Room 814 on this floor."

Claire pointed through the window.

"There."

The nurse looked.

Confusion crossed her face.

"Mrs. Carter..."

She pointed to an empty stretch of hallway.

"There's only Rooms 810 through 812."

Claire's blood ran cold.

She looked again.

The door marked 814 was gone.

Only a blank wall remained.

An hour later Detective Mercer entered carrying a tablet.

"You look like you've seen a ghost."

Claire didn't smile.

"I saw Room 814."

Mercer's expression changed.

"What did you say?"

"I watched nurses running past it."

"Claire..."

"There was a woman inside."

Mercer slowly sat down.

"I need you to tell me exactly what you saw."

She described the room.

The open door.

The pale woman sitting beside a bassinet.

The tiny blue knit cap on the newborn.

Mercer never interrupted.

When she finished, he turned the tablet around.

"This hospital removed Room 814 twelve years ago."

Claire stared.

The screen displayed old architectural plans.

Renovation records.

The room had once existed.

Now it was sealed behind a permanent wall during an expansion.

"No..."

Claire whispered.

"I saw it."

Mercer nodded slowly.

"I believe you saw something."

"But that's impossible."

"Maybe."

He leaned closer.

"But impossible things keep happening here."

At 5:17 a.m., the security team finally found the missing infant.

Not outside the hospital.

Not in another room.

Inside an unused imaging suite in the basement.

The baby was unharmed.

Wrapped tightly in a hospital blanket.

Lying alone on a warmed examination table.

No fingerprints.

No DNA.

No surveillance footage.

Just one envelope tucked beneath the blanket.

Inside was a single sentence typed on white paper.

Wrong child.

Mercer read the note twice.

Then a third time.

His stomach tightened.

Wrong child.

Not random.

Not opportunity.

Someone had intended to take a specific baby.

Someone had made a mistake.

He immediately called Labor and Delivery.

"Seal every maternity record."

The administrator answered,

"They're already locked."

"No one enters."

A long pause.

"Detective..."

"What?"

"They're gone."

"What's gone?"

"The electronic maternity records."

Mercer felt his pulse spike.

"All of them?"

"Every patient admitted during the last forty-eight hours."

Upstairs, Claire's phone vibrated again.

Unknown Number.

She hesitated before opening the message.

Only four words appeared.

Leave before she arrives.

Her fingers trembled.

Who?

Before she could think, another message arrived.

She's wearing blue scrubs.

Claire's breathing became shallow.

She looked toward the hallway.

A nurse was approaching.

Blue scrubs.

Blonde hair tucked beneath a surgical cap.

The same woman.

The one hospital records insisted had died four years ago.

The nurse smiled warmly as she stepped inside.

"Good morning, Claire."

Claire had never told anyone in the hospital her first name.

The woman closed the door behind her.

Very softly...

The lock clicked.

Then she reached into her pocket and removed a hospital ID badge.

She placed it on the bedside table.

Claire looked down.

The photograph matched the woman's face perfectly.

The name beneath it read:

Nurse Evelyn Brooks

Status:

Deceased.

Date of death:

March 18, 2022.

The woman smiled again.

May you like

"I think," she said quietly, "it's finally time we talked about your daughter."
