# Chapter 2: The Woman in Room 814 Claire ripped the adhesive label from the fetal monitor so quickly that it tore in half. **READY FOR TRANSFER.** The words stared back at her like a death sentence. Her pulse hammered against the IV taped to her wrist. She pressed the nurse call button. Almost immediately, a young nurse hurried into the room. "Mrs. Carter? What's wrong?" Claire held up the torn label. "Who put this on my monitor?" The nurse frowned. "I've never seen that before." "You expect me to believe someone walked into my room without permission?" "I'll call security." "No." Claire shook her head. "Call Detective Mercer." The nurse hesitated only a second before nodding. --- Twenty-five minutes later, Detective Daniel Mercer entered with two hospital security officers. He studied the label carefully. "Has anyone besides staff been inside?" "Just doctors... nurses..." Claire stopped. "And one woman." "The blonde?" Claire nodded. "I saw her standing outside my room." Daniel turned toward the charge nurse. "Name?" The woman checked the overnight roster. "No blonde nurse has been assigned to Labor and Delivery tonight." "What about another floor?" Another search. Nothing. Daniel's expression hardened. "Show me the surveillance footage." --- The security office occupied a quiet corner of the basement. Dozens of monitors displayed live feeds from every hallway. An officer rewound the camera outside Claire's room. 11:42 PM. Claire's room. Empty hallway. 11:43. Still empty. 11:44. Nothing. Daniel leaned closer. "Freeze." A reflection appeared for less than half a second on the polished floor. Someone had walked past the camera. Yet no person appeared in the video. Only the distorted reflection. "Enhance that." The technician enlarged the frame. A white shoe. The edge of blue scrubs. Nothing else. "It's like..." the technician whispered. "...the camera skipped." Daniel checked the timestamps. Exactly seventeen seconds were missing. Not enough for most people to notice. Enough for someone to enter a room. Enough for someone to leave a label. Enough for someone to disappear. --- Claire refused to sleep. Every footstep outside her door made her flinch. Around three in the morning, another patient wandered into her room. An elderly woman wearing a hospital robe. Thin. Gray-haired. Confused. She clutched an IV pole as if it were a cane. "I'm sorry," Claire said gently. "I think you're in the wrong room." The woman stared at Lily's monitor. "They're watching." Claire frowned. "What?" The old woman stepped closer. "Don't let them take the baby downstairs." Claire felt a chill spread through her chest. "What do you mean?" "They told my daughter it was just another test." Her voice trembled. "They never brought the baby back." Claire's throat tightened. "When was this?" The woman looked lost. "I don't remember." A nurse hurried into the room. "There you are, Mrs. Holloway." She smiled apologetically at Claire. "I'm sorry. She has dementia." Mrs. Holloway resisted as the nurse gently guided her toward the hallway. Before disappearing, she looked back over her shoulder. "They change names." Then she was gone. --- At dawn, Daniel returned carrying a cardboard evidence box. "We searched your in-laws' house." Claire sat forward. "What did you find?" He opened the box. Inside lay the hidden recorder from beneath her dining chair. The unsigned legal documents. A broken wine glass. And something Claire had never seen before. A small silver key card. Across the front, in faded black lettering, were three words. **MATERNAL ACCESS LEVEL.** Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Claire stared at it. "My mother-in-law had this?" "It was hidden inside the dining room cabinet." Daniel folded his arms. "The strange part..." He slid over another photograph. "This card doesn't belong to any current employee." Claire looked closer. "Who does it belong to?" Daniel didn't answer immediately. Instead, he placed a personnel file on the table. The photograph showed a smiling woman in blue scrubs. Blonde hair. Kind eyes. Claire's breath caught. It was the woman she'd seen outside her room. The employment status beneath the photo read only one word. **DECEASED.** Date of death: **Four years earlier.** Silence settled between them. Claire finally whispered, "I saw her tonight." Daniel's jaw tightened. "So either someone is wearing a dead woman's identity..." He paused. "...or someone wants us to believe they are." At that exact moment, alarms erupted throughout the maternity ward. Every monitor flashed red. Doors automatically locked. A panicked voice echoed over the hospital intercom. **"Code Pink. Code Pink. Infant security alert."** A baby... Had just disappeared. / Chapter 4 / 9

Chapter 5: The Note

Chapter 5: The Note

Claire didn't open the note.

Not immediately.

Her eyes remained fixed on Detective Daniel Mercer.

He hadn't moved.

Neither had the three hospital security officers behind him.

The only sound inside the room was the fetal monitor.

Beep... Beep... Beep...

Mercer's gaze shifted from the folded paper to Claire.

"Don't read it."

Claire frowned.

"What?"

"Not here."

One of the security officers looked confused.

"Detective?"

Mercer ignored him.

Instead, he stepped closer to Claire's bed and lowered his voice.

"Whatever Evelyn left you... don't let anyone else see it."

Claire slowly picked up the note.

Her fingers trembled.

"You said she's a witness."

"She is."

"Then why is hospital security calling her a suspect?"

Mercer didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward the hallway where nurses were rushing from room to room after the brief blackout.

When he finally spoke, his voice was almost inaudible.

"Because whoever controls this hospital also controls the official story."

Forty minutes later...

The maternity ward had returned to its uneasy rhythm.

Doctors blamed the blackout on an electrical fault.

The gunshot?

Security claimed a maintenance pipe had burst.

The screaming woman?

"A frightened visitor."

Every explanation sounded rehearsed.

Too perfect.

Too quick.

Claire watched staff move through the hallway as if nothing extraordinary had happened.

It was almost convincing.

Almost.

Until she noticed a janitor quietly scrubbing a small patch of floor outside her room.

There was no broken pipe.

Only a faint reddish stain disappearing beneath his mop.

Mercer stood inside the hospital chapel, waiting.

Five minutes later, Dr. Maya Patel entered through a side door.

She was the head of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

One of the few physicians Claire genuinely trusted.

"You sounded urgent," Maya said.

Mercer handed her a photograph.

"This woman."

Maya looked down.

Her face instantly changed.

"Evelyn Brooks."

"You recognize her."

"I trained under her."

Mercer studied her carefully.

"The records say she died."

Maya looked away.

"So do the records."

Silence lingered.

Finally Maya whispered,

"I attended her funeral."

Mercer's voice hardened.

"Was there a body?"

Maya slowly closed her eyes.

"I never saw one."

Back in Claire's room...

She finally unfolded the note.

There wasn't a paragraph.

Just three handwritten lines.

When labor begins...

Someone will try to separate you from Lily.

Say no to Operating Room Three.

Nothing else.

No signature.

No explanation.

Just those three sentences.

Claire read them again.

Operating Room Three.

Why that room?

Before she could think further, another contraction tightened across her abdomen.

Sharper than the ones she'd felt all day.

She winced.

The fetal monitor reacted immediately.

The nurse looked up.

"How long have you been having contractions like that?"

Claire swallowed.

"I thought they were from the assault."

The nurse pressed another button.

"They're not."

She looked directly at Claire.

"I think you're in labor."

Within minutes the room transformed.

More nurses.

More equipment.

Doctors checking monitors.

A neonatal team waiting outside.

Dr. Maya Patel entered, still carrying the photograph Mercer had given her.

She smiled reassuringly.

"Claire, we're going to take excellent care of you."

Claire nodded.

Then remembered the note.

"Which operating room?"

Maya looked surprised.

"Why?"

"In case I need a C-section."

"We haven't decided yet."

"If I do..."

Maya checked the surgical schedule.

"...probably Operating Room Three."

Claire's heart skipped.

"No."

Maya blinked.

"What?"

"I won't go into Operating Room Three."

The room fell silent.

One nurse exchanged a puzzled look with another.

Maya spoke gently.

"Claire, there's no reason to worry."

"There is for me."

"Why?"

Claire hesitated.

She couldn't explain Evelyn.

She couldn't explain the note.

Not without sounding delusional.

"I just won't."

Across the hospital...

A man wearing dark blue scrubs entered a restricted records office using a stolen access card.

He moved confidently.

No hesitation.

He knew exactly where he was going.

He inserted a flash drive into the main server.

A progress bar appeared.

DOWNLOADING...

Patient Files...

Genetic Profiles...

Birth Records...

95%...

98%...

100%.

He removed the drive.

Before leaving, he opened Claire Carter's electronic chart.

He changed exactly one field.

Delivery Plan

Previous:

Natural Labor Preferred

New:

Emergency Cesarean Authorized

He clicked SAVE.

Then disappeared into the hallway.

Detective Mercer arrived just as the update appeared on the system.

"Who changed this?" he demanded.

The records administrator stared at the screen.

"No one signed in."

"What do you mean?"

"There isn't a user ID."

Mercer leaned closer.

Every electronic change inside the hospital required a digital signature.

Except this one.

The authorization line contained only two words.

SYSTEM OVERRIDE

Mercer's face went pale.

"Disconnect the maternity servers."

"We can't."

"Do it."

"They're connected to life-support monitoring."

Mercer understood immediately.

Whoever had infiltrated the system had designed it perfectly.

Shut down the network...

And patients could die.

Leave it running...

And someone else controlled every medical record in the building.

Back upstairs, Claire's contractions intensified.

Dr. Patel checked the monitor.

"Lily's heart rate is dropping."

The room became noticeably quieter.

Another contraction.

Another drop.

Maya looked toward the charge nurse.

"We may need surgery."

Claire gripped the bedrail.

"What room?"

No one answered.

A surgical orderly rushed in.

"We've prepared Operating Room Three."

Claire's breathing stopped.

"No."

The orderly frowned.

"It's ready."

"I said no."

Dr. Patel placed a hand on Claire's shoulder.

"We're running out of time."

Claire looked desperately toward Detective Mercer, who had just entered the room.

He was about to speak...

When every monitor suddenly emitted a sharp warning tone.

Lily's heartbeat plummeted.

The room exploded into motion.

"Fetal distress!"

"We're losing her!"

"Move now!"

Two nurses unlocked Claire's bed and began rushing her toward the operating suite.

Claire twisted to read the signs above the hallway.

Operating Room One...

Operating Room Two...

Then...

A pair of automatic doors slowly slid open ahead.

Large black letters gleamed under the surgical lights.

OPERATING ROOM 3

As the bed crossed the threshold, Claire looked up.

Mounted above the operating table was a small security camera.

Its tiny red recording light blinked once.

Then turned green.

Someone...

May you like

Was already watching.
