Chapter 6 - The Golden Sky
The first-class cabin of the British Airways jet was quiet, illuminated only by the soft blue ambient lights of the ceiling. Outside the window, the Atlantic Ocean was hidden beneath a vast, breathtaking blanket of clouds, painted in brilliant shades of pink and gold by the setting sun.
Connor was fast asleep next to me, a contented smile on his face, his favorite soccer jersey neatly folded on the seat beside him. Madison was resting her head against my shoulder, her sketchbook open to a beautiful, completed drawing of a giant castle surrounded by red buses.
I sat with a crystal glass of champagne in my hand, looking down at the small digital screen embedded in the armrest. A single secure email had just cleared through my satellite network from Arthur Harrison.
“The eviction notice for the penthouse has been served. Bradley’s mother and sister are currently moving their things into a low-end motel near the airport. The corporate transition of Mitchell Development to Vance Holdings is complete. You are officially the sole owner of every square inch of property he ever touched. Welcome to your new beginning, Sarah.”
I smiled, a genuine, deep-seated expression of pure peace that I hadn't felt in ten long years.
Bradley had believed that by walking out of that mediator's office with his pockets full of stolen money and a mistress on his arm, he had won everything. He thought a mother’s love was a weakness, a vulnerability he could exploit to leave me with nothing but a broken heart and a suitcase.
He had forgotten that a woman who builds the foundation of your life can just as easily pull the rug out from under it.

I took a slow sip of the champagne, leaning back into the luxurious leather seat as the captain announced our final descent into London. The air was clean, the future was entirely ours, and as my children slept peacefully beside me under the golden sky, I knew that the Mitchell name no longer belonged to a liar in New York.
It belonged to us. And we were going to build something beautiful.
