Chapter 4: The Exposure of the Vipers

Chapter 4: The Exposure of the Vipers

The legal deposition room on the top floor of the Sforza Tower was a masterpiece of clinical intimidation. The table was a sixteen-foot slab of polished black granite, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass that looked down over the entire financial district of Madrid.

Marco Vega sat at the far end of the table, his expensive suit now wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot, his hair greasy from forty-eight hours of pure, unadulterated panic. Beside him sat his father, Ricardo Vega, a broken man whose face looked twenty years older than it had the previous week. On Marco’s left sat Sofia, her designer demeanor completely stripped away, her fingers twitching as she chewed on her manicured nails.

"This is a setup," Marco hissed, his voice cracking as he looked at the army of six elite corporate lawyers sitting across from him. "Where is Elena? Make her come here and look me in the eye! She can't do this to me! She’s my wife!"

"She is your wife until the judge signs the final decree, Mr. Vega," Don Alessandro said, entering the room from a private side door. He did not sit down; he remained standing at the head of the table, the absolute master of the room. "But she is no longer the woman you left in the mud. She is your primary creditor."

The glass doors at the back of the room slid open with a soft hiss.

Marco stood up, his mouth opening in shock. Elena walked into the room. She moved with a slow, powerful elegance, dressed in a tailored cream-colored silk maternity suit that accentuated her posture. In her arms, held securely in a dark green cashmere wrap, was baby Leo. She looked radiant, powerful, and completely untouched by the misery Marco had tried to inflict upon her.

"Elena..." Sofia stammered, taking a step back. "Elena, please... I didn't know... Marco told me you wanted the divorce! He told me you were happy to leave!"

Elena didn't look at Sofia. She didn't even afford her former best friend the dignity of her gaze. She walked directly to the head of the table, a security guard pulling out a plush leather chair for her. She sat down, settling Leo comfortably against her chest.

"Sit down, Marco," Elena said, her voice calm, clear, and utterly devoid of the emotion that had once made her weak in his presence.

Marco sank back into his chair, his hands shaking. "Elena, please... let's be rational. We have a child together. We can work this out. I was stressed... the pressure of the company... your mother’s illness... I didn't mean what I said at the cemetery."

Elena leaned forward, her green eyes locking onto his with the force of a physical weight.

"You meant every word, Marco. You looked at my belly, where your son was sleeping, and you told me he would grow up poor. You told me you wouldn't live that life. You didn't just leave me; you tried to erase me from existence so you could inherit what you thought was a clean slate with Sofia."

She tapped her finger on the granite table, and her lead attorney immediately opened a massive ledger.

"Your father’s company owes forty-five million euros to my mother's trust," Elena explained, her voice steady and clinical. "We have already begun the foreclosure. By tomorrow afternoon, the Vega name will be removed from every truck, every warehouse, and every corporate ledger in Spain. You own nothing. You are nothing."

Ricardo Vega turned to his son, his voice shaking with raw fury. "You idiot... you absolute idiot. You threw away the Sforza fortune for a mistress? You ruined us!"

"Elena, please," Marco begged, tears finally spilling over his cheeks as the reality of his total ruin set in. He slid off his chair, landing on his knees before her, a pathetic reflection of the way Elena had knelt in the mud over her mother’s grave. "Don't send my father to prison. Don't take everything. Give me a chance to be a father to Leo."

Elena looked down at him, her face an unreadable mask of ancient, dynastic stone.

"You will never touch my son, Marco. You will never see him, and he will never carry your name. He is a Martínez-Sforza. He will grow up knowing what true strength looks like, because his grandmother built an empire to protect him from men like you."

May you like

She stood up, holding Leo close to her heart. She turned her back on the kneeling man, walking toward the glass doors without looking back.

"Alessandro," she said softly as she exited. "Finish it."
