Chapter 2: The Anatomy of a Fall

The red dress, once a symbol of her power and allure, now clung to her like a shroud. Isabella watched from the center of the foyer, her world narrowing to the rhythmic, pulsing glow of the security camera’s recording light. She had spent years mastering the art of the performance, weaving complex webs of influence that shielded her from consequence. But as Marcus stood up, his face a mask of chilling indifference, she realized that performance art was no substitute for evidence.

Marcus didn't approach her. He simply walked toward the wall console, typed a sequence of commands, and a chime echoed through the mansion, signaling that the data stream had been off-loaded to a secure, external server.

"The police are already en route, Isabella," Marcus said, his voice stripped of the affection he had once showered upon her. He stepped back from the console, finally deigning to look her in the eye. His gaze wasn't filled with rage; it was worse. It was filled with profound, weary contempt. "They’ll find the footage. They’ll find the financial records I’ve spent the last six months decrypting. And they’ll find the truth about why this woman—my sister—ended up at the bottom of these stairs."

Isabella felt a phantom sensation of falling. "Marcus, you’re making a mistake. They’ll twist it. You know how the board operates. They’ll destroy you right alongside me."

"Then let them try," he replied, turning back to his sister, who was finally beginning to stir, her eyelids fluttering. "At least I’ll be falling from the truth, not from a pedestal built on your bones."

As the distant sound of sirens began to bleed into the silence of the estate, Isabella realized her strategy of manipulation had been her greatest oversight. She had played Marcus for a fool, failing to understand that his "blind devotion" was never ignorance—it was a calculated observation period.
