Chapter 4 : The Trial of Mirrors

The trial was not the grand stage Isabella had anticipated. It was a cold, efficient dismantling of her identity. Witness after witness—house staff, bank officials, the forensic experts—laid out the pieces of her life with clinical precision. The most damaging witness was Marcus.

He sat on the stand, his posture perfect, his answers short and devastatingly accurate. He didn't look at her once. He spoke of the day he realized she was poisoning his sister’s reputation; he spoke of the day he realized she was diverting family funds. He painted a picture of a woman who was a ghost in her own life, a parasite that had mistaken itself for a queen.

Isabella looked out at the gallery, expecting to see allies, but she saw only empty seats. She had spent her life discarding people the moment they ceased to be useful, and now, the vacuum she had created was closing in on her.

"The defense has no further questions," her lawyer muttered, closing his file with a heavy sigh. He hadn't fought hard; he knew the footage was ironclad.

As the judge announced the recess to consider the sentencing, Isabella caught Marcus’s eye as he walked out of the courtroom. There was no hatred in his expression—only a profound, hollow pity. It was the final blow to her ego. She hadn't been his great love or his great nemesis; she had been a footnote, a mistake he was correcting.
