Chapter 15 - THE MOTHERS EVELYN RECRUITEDEvelyn entered the cooperation room wearing county detention clothing and no pearls.
Her attorney sat beside her.
Across the table were Detective Lane, Dr. Collins and a prosecutor specializing in reproductive crimes.
Daniel and Rebecca watched from separate locations. Clara did not attend.
The first question concerned Marisol Vega.
Evelyn remembered her.
“She was frightened and had nowhere to live.”
“What did you promise?”
“A safe delivery and help finding work.”
“Did she agree to adoption?”
“She signed forms.”
“Before or after medication?”
Evelyn looked toward her attorney.
“After.”
“Did you tell her the baby died?”
“Robert did.”
“Did you correct him?”
“No.”
“Did you know the child lived?”
“Yes.”
“Why remain silent?”
“Robert said the placement family would provide more.”
“That was not the question.”
Evelyn’s face changed.
“Because Marisol threatened the organization.”
“She was seventeen.”
“She would have exposed everything.”
The prosecutor opened the next folder.
Teresa Long.
A married woman hospitalized after a difficult birth. Her husband was told she abandoned the baby.
Evelyn had signed the witness statement.
Then Hannah Price.
A college student whose parents pressured her to surrender. Evelyn told the court Hannah was irrational after childbirth.
Then Olivia Grant.
Then Nora Ellis.
Nineteen placements.
Some women had considered adoption voluntarily.
Evelyn’s lies removed their chance to decide after delivery.
“I did not take every child,” she said.
“No,” the prosecutor answered. “You helped create documents that made taking them easier.”
Evelyn began describing Robert’s threats.
He promised she would find Rebecca if she cooperated.
He threatened to remove Daniel if she refused.
He controlled money and housing.
All of that mattered.
Then the prosecutor displayed a payment ledger from years after Daniel became an adult.
Robert had already disappeared.
Evelyn continued receiving placement fees.
“What was he threatening then?”
Evelyn looked down.
“By then, New Beginnings was my life.”
Daniel stopped the recording.
He returned only after walking through the hospital corridor twice.
He had wanted a story in which Evelyn became cruel because Robert left her no alternative.
The evidence showed coercion narrowing choices.
It did not show choices disappearing.
Rebecca watched the full interview.
When Evelyn was asked about their meeting years earlier, she began crying.
“I knew Rebecca was my daughter.”
Rebecca became still.
“You told Daniel you only suspected,” the prosecutor said.
“I recognized the eyes.”
“What did Robert say?”
“That if I spoke to her, he would transfer Daniel.”
“Daniel was an infant?”
“He was two.”
“So you chose to protect him.”
“Yes.”
“And allowed Rebecca to leave believing no one wanted her.”
“I could not lose both.”
Rebecca turned away from the screen.
The sentence gave Evelyn motive.
It did not give Rebecca a mother.
Marisol Vega was located in New Mexico. Her child, Sofia, was now twenty-three and living with adoptive parents who believed the placement lawful.
Marisol wanted contact.
Sofia did not.
The investigators did not treat Marisol’s pain as permission to override her adult daughter.
Accurate records were provided. Medical histories were corrected. Contact information remained sealed.
Evelyn asked whether Daniel and Rebecca would speak with her.
Their answers were collected separately.
Daniel: not now.
Rebecca: no.
No one translated either response into punishment.
The cooperation continued.
Evelyn identified trust officers, former nurses, family-law attorneys and placement homes. Her information helped locate records involving thirty-one children.
Prosecutors agreed to consider cooperation during sentencing.
They promised no reunion.
The Carter trust vault was opened with her code.
Inside were adoption files, genetic reports, payment accounts and prepared emergency documents.
One folder carried Clara’s full name.
The first pages described postpartum incapacity.
The final page was a draft death certificate.

Cause of death:
POSTPARTUM HEMORRHAGE WITH CARDIAC COLLAPSE.
Physician:
RICHARD COLE, MD.
The date had been left blank.
Daniel stared at the signature.
The dinner, drugs and staged video had offered New Beginnings two possible outcomes.
If Clara survived, they would declare her unfit.
