Chapter 9 - The Other Daniel CarterPolice surrounded Meadow House before dawn.

The property stood beyond snow-covered fields, disguised as a postpartum wellness retreat. Its website advertised private recovery care for affluent mothers.

The front gate opened voluntarily.

A man walked onto the porch.

He was approximately Daniel’s age.

Same height.

Same dark hair.

Similar facial structure.

Not identical, but close enough to explain why the network considered them compatible.

“I’m Daniel Carter,” the man said.

Daniel stood behind an unmarked vehicle beside Rachel and Detective Marcus Lane.

“No,” Daniel whispered. “You were.”

The other Daniel introduced himself as David Cole.

He claimed he surrendered the Carter identity twenty years earlier when Robert chose Daniel as the more successful successor candidate.

Children within New Beginnings were assigned provisional identities. Families evaluated them. Some kept the names. Others were moved and renamed.

David had been raised for twelve years believing Robert and Evelyn would become his permanent parents.

Then Daniel arrived.

“You replaced me,” David said across the secured phone line.

“I was a baby.”

“I know.”

His resentment was directed at the system, but decades had taught him to attach it to Daniel’s face.

David became an administrator at Meadow House because Robert promised him a future position within the trust if he maintained placements.

“Where is Clara’s baby?” Daniel asked.

“Inside.”

“Is he breathing?”

“A nurse is treating him.”

“Bring him out.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Robert activated a medical custody order.”

Rachel examined the order transmitted through the gate terminal. It carried a judge’s digital signature.

The judge was unreachable.

The order claimed the infant was abandoned and medically fragile, authorizing Meadow House to maintain emergency care.

Daniel showed David the recorded video of Robert bargaining with treatment.

David’s expression changed.

“He said the baby was surrendered.”

“Clara screamed when she saw him.”

“She is the birth mother?”

“Yes.”

David looked toward the house.

“Evelyn told staff the child came from an unregistered migrant patient.”

Another stolen identity.

Detective Lane demanded entry based on suspected kidnapping and immediate medical risk.

David hesitated.

Then the power inside Meadow House failed.

Emergency shutters lowered.

Robert had triggered lockdown remotely.

Smoke appeared near the rear chimney.

Daniel’s heart stopped.

“Is there a fire?”

David ran back toward the house.

Officers breached the gate.

Inside, nurses carried infants from rooms while alarms remained silent. The building held twelve newborns and six recovering women.

Many patients believed they were at a legitimate clinic.

Others had signed private adoption agreements they did not fully understand.

Daniel searched with officers.

He found Evelyn in a second-floor nursery holding Clara’s baby.

The infant wore an oxygen tube.

Evelyn stood beside an open window.

“Do not come closer.”

Daniel stopped.

“You’re going to drop him?”

Her face twisted.

“I would never hurt my grandson.”

“He is Clara’s son.”

“He could still be raised correctly.”

“Give him to the nurse.”

“If Robert loses the trust, all these children lose protection.”

Behind Daniel, nurses moved infants toward exits.

“They need families, not owners.”

Evelyn began crying.

“You don’t understand what happened to me.”

“Then explain after you hand him over.”

She had entered New Beginnings at sixteen after becoming pregnant. Robert’s family promised to protect her reputation.

The baby was taken.

Evelyn never saw the child again.

Years later, Robert offered marriage and a role inside the network. He said helping other placements would give meaning to her loss.

“You helped do to Clara what they did to you,” Daniel said.

“I made sure the child survived.”

“You drugged his mother.”

“She would have ruined the Carter line.”

The infant coughed weakly.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Mom, look at him. He needs the nurse, not a trust.”

Evelyn looked down.

For one moment, the grandmother existed without the administrator.

Her arms loosened.

The nurse approached.

Then Robert entered through the rear doorway carrying a small pistol.

“Evelyn, step away from him.”

She turned.

“You said you were at the safe site.”

“I needed to correct David’s failure.”

Robert pointed the weapon toward Daniel.

The infant’s breathing alarm sounded.

Evelyn looked between her husband and the baby.

“Robert, he’s sick.”

“The child remains useful only if the transfer is uncontested.”

Daniel heard the word useful.

So did Evelyn.

She finally understood that Robert did not see a grandson.

He saw a requirement.

Evelyn stepped toward the nurse.

Robert raised the pistol.

David Cole appeared behind him and struck his arm.

The shot shattered the window.

Officers entered.

The nurse took the baby from Evelyn.

Daniel reached him seconds later.

The newborn’s eyes opened briefly.

Daniel whispered Clara’s name.

The baby’s crying softened.

Police secured Robert, but before being taken away, he looked at Daniel.

“You believe rescuing one infant ends this?”

Daniel held Clara’s son.

Robert smiled.

“Noah was not the only Carter heir created.”

At the hospital, independent testing confirmed the rescued baby was Clara’s biological son.

Daniel named him Lucas, the name Clara had chosen privately before Evelyn insisted the baby should be Noah.

Both newborns now slept in monitored bassinets beside Clara.

One biologically Clara and an unknown father, according to the first rapid test.

One biologically Daniel and an unknown mother.

Daniel stared at the result.

“Unknown father?”

Clara looked at him.

“You’re not Lucas’s father?”

The laboratory report showed no genetic relationship between Daniel and the baby Clara carried.

Her pregnancy had also been created through reproductive fraud.
