Chapter 3 - TABLE ONE

The double doors of the main ballroom swung open, and Arthur Vance walked in holding Lily’s small, mittened hand.

The ballroom was a sea of light, music, and opulence. Over five hundred of the city’s most influential figures sat around circular tables draped in white linen, surrounded by massive floral centerpieces of white roses and silver pine.

When Arthur walked into the center aisle, the conversation began to hush.

People noticed the CEO first—tall, formidable, the man holding the purse strings of the city's largest economic engine. Then their eyes drifted down to the little girl walking beside him in her oversized, scuffed boots and patched brown coat, holding a pickle jar tightly in her arms.

Standing near the main podium, Sarah Carter—Lily’s mother—was currently wearing a white catering apron over her plain black uniform.

Sarah was working the event as a hired server for the catering company, earning twelve dollars an hour to clear champagne glasses so she could buy a new heating element for their apartment's space heater. She had been balancing a tray of appetizers when she glanced toward the center aisle.

The tray nearly slipped from her hands.

"Lily?" Sarah whispered, her heart dropping into her stomach in absolute terror.

Sarah recognized the brown coat immediately. She recognized the patched elbows—the brown thread she had pulled through the fabric three nights ago while sitting at her kitchen table weeping over the unpaid gas utility bill.

Oh God, Sarah thought, panic flooding her veins. Did she follow me here? Did she get lost in the cold? Are they going to arrest us?

Sarah set her tray down on a side service station and rushed toward the main aisle, her face pale, her hands shaking in her white apron.

"Lily!" Sarah cried out, breaking catering protocol as she hurried toward her daughter. "Lily, baby! What are you doing here?! I told you to stay with Mrs. Gable next door!"

Lily’s eyes lit up when she saw her mother. "Mom! Look! The nice man said my jar can stay!"

Arthur Vance stopped, his sharp eyes taking in Sarah’s catering badge, her red-knuckled hands, and the clear terror in her eyes. He saw the resemblance instantly—the same fierce, protective warmth in Sarah’s posture that was mirrored in Lily’s quiet dignity.

"Are you Lily's mother?" Arthur asked gently, stepping between Sarah and a catering manager who was already walking over to fire her for leaving her post.

"Yes, sir! I am so sorry!" Sarah begged, her eyes brimming with tears as she tried to pull Lily behind her. "She didn't mean to cause a scene! Please don't fire me! I'll take her outside right now—"

"No one is firing you, ma'am," Arthur said firmly. He looked over his shoulder at the catering manager, who froze in his tracks and immediately retreated into the shadows. "And no one is going outside."

Arthur walked straight to Table One—the prime table directly beneath the main banner, where the Mayor of Bellweather, the City Council President, and their wives were seated.

Arthur didn't say a word. He simply tapped the back of the Mayor's chair.

Mayor Thomas Cole looked up, bewildered. "Arthur? What's going on? Who is this child?"

"Thomas, take your wife and move to Table Twelve," Arthur instructed without a hint of hesitation. "This table now belongs to Miss Lily Carter and her mother."

Mayor Cole blinked in utter shock. "Arthur... Table Twelve is near the kitchen doors! We are in the middle of the opening remarks!"

"Then you’ll have a great view of the kitchen," Arthur replied flatly. "Move. Now."
