Chapter 7 - THE MORNING AFTER

By 7:00 AM the following morning, the story of Lily’s pickle jar was the lead news item across the country.

Video footage taken by a guest on their phone showing Arthur Vance kneeling on the salted ice to talk to Lily had gone viral on social media, garnering over thirty million views overnight. Headline articles in the Boston Globe, The New York Times, and CNN hailed Arthur Vance's speech as a sweeping rebuke of corporate hypocrisy.

Inside her small two-bedroom apartment on 4th Street, Sarah Carter woke up to the sound of steam radiating comfortably from the freshly repaired radiators.

Arthur's contracted HVAC team had arrived at 6:00 AM, working silently and efficiently to replace the broken heating element with a brand-new, high-efficiency system. For the first time in three years, the apartment was warm enough for Lily to walk around in a cotton t-shirt instead of two heavy sweaters.

Sarah stood in her small kitchen, brewing coffee, listening to the quiet hum of the furnace downstairs. It felt like a dream.

Suddenly, a heavy, insistent knock echoed against her front door.

Sarah frowned, setting her coffee mug down. She walked to the entry, pulled back the small brass peephole cover, and froze.

Standing in the hallway were two uniformed officers from the Department of Children and Families (DCF), accompanied by a woman in a sharp gray suit holding a manila folder.

Sarah’s heart seized in sudden, cold panic. She unlocked the door, pulling it open three inches.

"Can I help you?" Sarah asked, her voice trembling slightly.

"Sarah Carter?" the woman in the gray suit asked, her face completely unreadable. "My name is Brenda Vance—no relation to Arthur Vance—I am a senior caseworker with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families. We received an emergency child endangerment complaint regarding your daughter, Lily Carter."

Sarah felt the air leave her lungs. "What?! Endangerment?!"

"The complaint alleges that you repeatedly leave a seven-year-old child unattended in a unheated apartment during sub-zero temperatures while working unmonitored night shifts," Brenda said, looking down at her notes. "It also alleges that your child was found wandering the streets alone last night near Harrington Civic Hall."

"That's a lie!" Sarah cried, tears instantly springing to her eyes. "Lily was with our neighbor, Mrs. Gable! Mrs. Gable stepped out for ten minutes to get her heart medication, and Lily walked six blocks to bring her jar to the hall! I didn't leave her alone!"

"We have to inspect the premises and take a formal statement, Mrs. Carter," Brenda said sternly, stepping forward. "If the living conditions are unheated or unsafe, we may have to temporarily place Lily in emergency protective custody pending a hearing."
