CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Who Opened Every Letter

CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Who Opened Every Letter

The library was silent except for the crackling fireplace.

Elena sat across from me, exhausted after years of carrying heartbreak alone.

The triplets stayed close to María, coloring quietly on the rug.

None of them recognized their aunt.

Not because they were too young.

Because they had been kept apart.

I untied the blue ribbon.

Inside were more than one hundred letters.

Every birthday.

Every Christmas.

Every first day of school.

Every holiday.

Each one unopened.

Each one stolen from my daughters.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Did you do this?"

She folded her arms.

"I protected this family."

"You isolated it."

"They didn't need outside influence."

"They needed their mother's family."

"They needed stability."

"They needed love!"

My voice echoed through the library.

No one spoke afterward.

Elena finally broke the silence.

"May I tell you something?"

I nodded.

"The last time I saw Lucia..."

She smiled sadly.

"...she made me promise something."

My hands tightened around the letters.

"What promise?"

"If anything ever happened to her..."

Elena's voice trembled.

"...I was to make sure her girls always knew how deeply they were loved."

She looked at the unopened envelopes.

"I failed."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You were never given the chance."

María quietly stood.

"Sir..."

"Yes?"

"There may be one more thing."

I looked at her.

"When I cleaned Miss Vanessa's office yesterday..."

She hesitated.

"I found a locked drawer."

Vanessa's expression changed instantly.

"You had no right to touch my office."

"I was dusting."

"You were snooping."

María ignored the insult.

"I accidentally knocked over a key."

James looked toward me.

"I know which drawer she's referring to."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Absolutely not."

But it was too late.

Within minutes, James unlocked the drawer.

Inside were neatly organized folders.

Travel schedules.

Household reports.

Invoices.

Then...

a thick stack labeled:

Alejandro – Do Not Show.

Every instinct in my body screamed.

I opened it.

The first page was from the girls' pediatrician.

Recommendation: Family counseling. Children show signs of emotional withdrawal and separation anxiety. Father should reduce travel if possible.

Stamped across the front in red ink:

Handled.

The second report came from their preschool teacher.

Camila cries whenever pickup is delayed. Sofía refuses lunch. Valentina asks daily whether her father still loves them.

Also marked:

No action required.

The third...

and fourth...

and fifth...

Every warning someone had tried to send me...

had been intercepted.

Never reaching my hands.

I could barely hear my own voice.

"How long?"

Vanessa answered coldly.

"They would only have distracted you."

"Distracted me?"

"Your business supports this family."

"My daughters are this family."

She didn't respond.

Because she couldn't.

There was nothing left to defend.

Then James found one final envelope hidden beneath the reports.

It wasn't addressed to me.

It was addressed to Vanessa.

From a private investigator.

I unfolded the letter.

The first sentence made every hair on my arms stand up.

As requested, I have completed the background investigation on María Santos.

Requested?

Why was Vanessa investigating a housekeeper?

I kept reading.

The investigator had found nothing criminal.

Nothing suspicious.

Nothing except one detail.

Subject previously worked for the Children's Protection Advocacy Center and has testified in multiple child welfare cases involving emotional abuse.

I slowly looked toward María.

She lowered her eyes.

"I didn't tell anyone."

"Why?"

"Because I wasn't hired as an advocate."

She looked at my daughters with tears in her eyes.

"I was hired to clean."

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered the words that changed everything.

"But after three days in this house..."

She looked directly at me.

"...I realized your daughters didn't need another housekeeper."

"They needed someone willing to risk being fired to keep them safe."

Before I could answer, the front gate alarm suddenly sounded through the mansion.

James rushed to the security monitor.

His face lost all color.

"Sir..."

"What is it?"

He stared at the screen in disbelief.

"There are police officers at the gate."

May you like

He looked back at me.

"And they're asking to speak with Miss Vanessa Drake."
