CHAPTER 7 — The Knock That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 7 — The Knock That Changed Everything
The mansion fell into complete silence.
No one moved.
The only sound was the security alarm echoing through the marble halls.
James looked from the monitor to me.
"There are four officers, sir."
I nodded.
"Let them in."
Vanessa stepped forward immediately.
"You can't be serious."
"I am."
"This is a misunderstanding."
"Then you have nothing to fear."
For the first time since I had known her, I saw genuine panic.
Not embarrassment.
Not anger.
Fear.
Minutes later, two detectives entered the library, accompanied by uniformed officers.
The older detective introduced himself.
"Mr. Ferrera, I'm Detective Daniel Ruiz."
I shook his hand.
"What brings you here?"
He glanced briefly at Vanessa.
"We're looking into several complaints involving financial fraud, identity forgery, and coercion."
Vanessa's face turned white.
"There must be some mistake."
The detective calmly opened a folder.
"Miss Drake, we've received sworn statements from three former employees."
James looked shocked.
"There were others?"
The detective nodded.
"Two nannies and one personal assistant."
María quietly lowered her eyes.
She already suspected.
The detective continued.
"They each reported being pressured to falsify household records."
He laid photographs across the table.
Copies of signatures.
Expense reports.
Bank transfers.
Even my own signature.
Forged.
I stared in disbelief.
"You forged my authorization?"
Vanessa shook her head desperately.
"I only signed what needed to be signed."
"With my name."
"You were unavailable."
"You stole my identity."
The younger detective spoke next.
"Mr. Ferrera, we're also investigating reports that charitable donations from the Ferrera Family Foundation were redirected to shell companies."
My stomach dropped.
The foundation had been created in Lucia's memory.
It funded children's hospitals.
Scholarships.
Grief counseling.
I slowly looked at Vanessa.
"You used my wife's foundation?"
She remained silent.
That silence was answer enough.
The girls looked confused.
"Daddy..."
Camila whispered.
"Are the police angry?"
I knelt beside them.
"No, sweetheart."
"They're here to help."
"Like superheroes?"
I smiled through tears.
"Exactly like superheroes."
The detectives exchanged a glance.
Even they struggled to hide their emotions.
Detective Ruiz turned toward Vanessa.
"Miss Drake, at this time we'd like you to accompany us for questioning."
She laughed bitterly.
"You have no proof."
James quietly stepped forward.
"I do."
Everyone looked at him.
"I kept copies."
Vanessa's head snapped toward him.
"You what?"
James met her gaze without fear.
"I've worked for the Ferrera family for thirty-two years."
His voice trembled.
"I promised Mrs. Lucia I would protect those girls."
He reached into his jacket.
"I should have spoken sooner."
He handed Detective Ruiz a flash drive.
"I've been collecting evidence since the first nanny resigned."
The detective accepted it carefully.
"This may help considerably."
Vanessa stared at James with disbelief.
"You betrayed me."
James answered softly.
"No."
"I finally stopped betraying them."
He looked at the triplets.
Vanessa realized she had lost.
She turned toward me one last time.
"You'll regret this."
I shook my head.
"The only thing I regret..."
I looked at my daughters.
"...is not seeing the truth sooner."
Without another word, the officers escorted her toward the front entrance.
As the massive doors closed behind her...
the mansion became quieter than it had ever been.
Then something unexpected happened.
Sofía looked around.
"...Is she gone?"
"Yes."
"Forever?"
"Yes."
The little girl smiled.
A real smile.
The first one I had seen without fear.
Soon Valentina laughed.
Camila hugged Bunny tightly.
The house suddenly sounded alive again.
May you like
And for the first time in years...
it sounded like home.
