News of Isabella's separation spread quickly through financial circles.
Rumors followed.
The board commissioned an independent review of every major transaction completed during Damian's leadership.
The investigation uncovered no theft by Isabella.
Instead, directors learned she had personally negotiated several rescue financing agreements that prevented bankruptcy during difficult years.
Emails showed she had recommended keeping employees paid even when profits disappeared.
Several executives quietly admitted they had assumed Damian was responsible.
"He always took the credit," one director confessed.
Another shook her head.
"She never corrected anyone."
By afternoon, Damian arrived at Montrose Headquarters requesting to see Isabella.
She agreed to meet.
Only once.
He entered the conference room alone.
"You planned this."
She looked at him calmly.
"No."
"I finally stopped protecting you."
He stared at her.
"I loved you."
"I believe you did."
"But love without respect doesn't survive."
He lowered his eyes.
"I hit you."
"Twice."
"There's no excuse."
For the first time in years, Isabella saw genuine shame instead of wounded pride.
