Chapter 10: A New Dawn

The cavern was dead silent, save for Robert’s pathetic whimpering. Silas lay pinned beneath my father, glaring up with defiant hatred.

"Kill me, Frank," Silas spat. "The syndicate will just send another."

"No, they won't," my mother said, walking over with a satellite phone. "Because while you were hunting us, the FBI raided Vance's safehouses using the leak Mia provided. The syndicate's domestic network is being dismantled as we speak."

She handed the phone to my father. "Director Vance is in federal custody. And he's singing like a bird to save his own skin."

My father looked down at Silas, then slowly lowered the gun. "I'm not a killer anymore, Silas. I'm a retired woodworker."

He struck Silas across the temple with the butt of the rifle, knocking him unconscious. He then walked over to Robert, pulling him up by the collar with one hand.

"You," my father whispered, "are going to walk to the main road. You're going to turn yourself in to the authorities. If I ever see your face near my daughter again, there won't be a conversation."

Robert nodded frantically, tears streaming down his bruised face, and sprinted blindly toward the tunnel exit.

My father watched him go, then turned to me. The harsh lines on his face softened, and he pulled me into a tight, fierce hug. "It's over, Mia. It's finally over."

Months later, I sat on the porch of a beautiful, sunlit farmhouse in Tuscany, Italy. The air smelled of fresh basil and warm earth. My mother was inside, arguing with the locals over the best way to roast tomatoes, while my father was in the back shed, sanding down a piece of rich olive wood.

The bruises were entirely gone. My name was different now, and my past was buried in federal archives. I sipped my coffee, looking out over the rolling hills.

I had lost the life I knew, but I had gained something infinitely more valuable: the truth. I wasn't a victim. I wasn't a pawn. I was the daughter of Frank Sterling, and for the first time in my life, I was holding the pen to write my own story.
