Chapter 3: The Asset's Demise

The holding cell at the precinct was cold, smelling of bleach and stale sweat. Robert sat on the edge of the metal cot, his hands trembling. The arrogant smirk that had defined him for the last three years was completely erased, replaced by the bruised, swollen reality of my father's wrath.

He looked up as the heavy iron door clanged open. A police officer stepped inside, carrying a small tray of food. But there was something wrong. The officer's uniform fit poorly, and his eyes held a dead, professional emptiness that Robert recognized immediately.

"You're not a cop," Robert whispered, backing against the concrete wall.

"And you're not a very good asset," the man replied, setting the tray down. "You were supposed to retrieve the decryption keys, Robert. Instead, you let the target's father beat you senseless, and the target just uploaded the entire grid to the public."

"I didn't know!" Robert pleaded, his voice cracking. "Sterling is a ghost! He was supposed to be retired! Please, I can fix this. Just get me to Vance."

"Vance is currently shredding documents and preparing to flee the country. The network is compromised," the man said, pulling a syringe from his sleeve. "The organization is cleaning house. You're a liability."

"No, wait! I know where they might go!" Robert shrieked, desperately grasping at straws. "I lived with her! I know her habits!"

The man paused, the syringe hovering inches from Robert's neck. "Tell me."

Halfway across the state, I sat in the passenger seat of the Honda, watching the sunrise paint the sky in hues of orange and pink. I felt a strange sense of peace. The man who had terrorized me, who had manipulated my love and abused my trust, was no longer my problem. I had burned his empire to the ground.

"Get some sleep, Mia," my father said, passing me a bottle of water. "We have a long drive ahead."

I closed my eyes, not knowing that Robert had just bought his life by selling our only potential weakness: my son's favorite hiding place.
