Chapter 2: The Lie That Destroyed a Dynasty

The detective pressed play again.

Now everyone watched Preston as though seeing him for the first time.

He returned to the bridal table.

Pretended to search his pockets.

Looked under plates.

Patted his jacket dramatically.

Then grabbed the microphone.

"My phone is gone."

Gasps spread exactly as they had earlier.

Only now...

Everyone knew they had been watching a performance.

The footage switched to another camera angle near the guest tables.

It captured every second of Preston marching toward Sophie.

His expression wasn't confused.

It wasn't worried.

It was determined.

When he reached into the jacket pocket, he already knew exactly where his phone was.

Because he had put it there himself.

Madison covered her mouth.

"Oh God..."

Her father stood abruptly.

"You framed an eight-year-old?"

Preston shouted at the screen.

"That's edited!"

The hotel manager calmly answered.

"Our surveillance system records directly to encrypted servers."

"It cannot be edited without leaving digital evidence."

Richard Bennett immediately demanded,

"We'll hire forensic experts."

The detective simply nodded.

"So will the State."

But the room still hadn't seen the worst part.

Another camera covered the ballroom entrance.

It recorded Preston grabbing the heavy oak menu board.

Frame by frame.

There was no struggle.

No self-defense.

No accident.

He deliberately raised the board above shoulder height.

Stepped forward.

And swung.

The hardwood struck Sophie across the side of her head.

The impact was so violent several guests looked away.

A woman near the back burst into tears.

One elderly man quietly whispered,

"He hit a child..."

The detective stopped the video.

Then he faced Preston.

"Would you like to change your statement?"

Preston said nothing.

His hands trembled.

His perfect wedding had become a crime scene.

Then something unexpected happened.

Madison removed her engagement ring.

She stared at Preston for several seconds.

"I asked you one question."

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"Did she really steal your phone?"

"You looked me in the eyes..."

"...and lied."

Preston stepped toward her.

"Madison, listen—"

She stepped back.

"Don't touch me."

Then, before two hundred witnesses...

She placed the diamond ring on the head table.

May you like

"I won't marry a man who attacks children."

The ballroom erupted.
