Chapter 3: Everything Hidden Comes Out

The wedding was canceled before midnight.
But the investigation had only begun.
Detectives collected every guest's phone.
Several people admitted they had recorded Preston's speech.
Others had captured the attack from different angles.
One bridesmaid quietly approached me.
"I need to tell you something."
She handed Detective Alvarez her phone.
"There are messages."
Messages Preston had accidentally sent into the wrong wedding planning group.
One text read:
"After tonight Evelyn will never show her face around this family again."
Another:
"Once everyone believes Sophie stole the phone, Mom and Dad will finally cut Evelyn out of Grandpa's trust."
The detective frowned.
"There was money involved."
More searching uncovered emails.
Financial records.
Loan applications.
Preston's construction company was drowning in debt.
He owed millions.
Only one inheritance remained between him and bankruptcy.
Mine.
Because our late grandfather had written a condition into his will.
My share could never pass to Preston voluntarily.
Unless...
I became publicly disgraced.
Or signed it away myself.
The fake theft had never been about a phone.
It had been about destroying my reputation forever.
And when I resisted...
He chose violence.
My mother broke first.
She collapsed into a chair.
"I didn't know..."
I looked at her.
"You watched your granddaughter bleed."
She cried.
"I thought..."
"You thought your son couldn't lie."
My father remained silent.
But his face had aged ten years in a single night.
Two days later, another surprise arrived.
Hotel employee Marcus Hill came forward.
He confessed Preston had offered him twenty thousand dollars to temporarily disable one security camera.
Marcus accepted the money.
But he never completed the request.
He became frightened and simply kept working.

The camera Preston believed was offline...
Was the very camera that exposed him.
