Chapter 2 – The Man Richard Should Never Have Threatened

The driveway fell silent.

Richard held the folded court papers in the air like a victory flag.

"You've already lost," he said. "Every person here knows Lily is emotionally unstable. She attacked me. She begged us not to let you take her."

No one answered.

Not because they believed him.

Because wealthy men had taught them that silence was safer than truth.

Arthur lowered the satellite phone only long enough to look Richard directly in the eyes.

"You've spent your whole life buying people," he said quietly.

Richard smirked.

"And?"

"You forgot there are still some people money can't reach."

The calm voice returned through the speaker.

"Federal response team deployed. Estimated arrival: seventeen minutes."

Richard laughed.

"You think you're frightening me with some fake military phone?"

Arthur didn't answer.

Instead, he removed Lily's cracked phone from his jacket pocket.

The screen was shattered.

The recording was not.

He pressed play.

The guests heard Richard's own voice.

"Go ahead. Call the police. My family owns this town."

A few heads slowly turned toward the backyard.

The Chief of Police stopped chewing.

Then another sound played.

A slap.

Lily crying.

Richard shouting—

"You're staying because I say you're staying!"

Every face changed.

Richard lunged forward.

Arthur stepped once.

Nothing dramatic.

One precise movement.

Richard's wrist locked.

The papers slipped from his hand.

They scattered across the driveway.

Arthur released him before anyone could accuse him of assault.

Richard stumbled backward, suddenly realizing the old man wasn't weak.

May you like

He had simply chosen not to fight.

Until today.
