Chapter 3 – Secrets Buried for Fifteen Years

The first black SUVs rolled through the gates exactly sixteen minutes later.

Not police.

Federal vehicles.

No flashing lights.

No sirens.

Just authority.

Six men and two women exited wearing plain jackets displaying only small identification badges.

The lead agent walked directly to Arthur.

"Colonel Arthur Bennett?"

"It's been a long time."

The younger agents exchanged surprised glances.

Richard frowned.

"Colonel?"

The lead agent nodded respectfully.

"This man commanded hostage recovery operations overseas before he retired."

Silence.

Arthur had never told Lily.

After her mother's death, he buried every medal, every commendation, every piece of that life.

He wanted to be only a father.

The lead agent accepted Lily's phone inside an evidence bag.

"Chain of custody begins now."

Another team photographed every bruise before paramedics lifted Lily onto a stretcher.

Richard finally found his voice.

"You don't have jurisdiction!"

The agent looked at him calmly.

"Domestic violence."

He paused.

"Witness intimidation."

Another pause.

"Conspiracy involving public officials."

Then he looked toward the backyard.

"And possibly corruption under federal investigation."

The Chief of Police slowly set his paper plate on the picnic table.

He looked afraid.
